At first I felt it was the usual both sides playing the media and drumming up interest but then I got the impression more and more that Wilder and his team were using it as a publicity stunt. Now it's obvious. Wilder went from "I'll fight for free", "Joshua is only about money", to "I want generational wealth" for turning down more than double he made for Fury and 7x more than he got for Ortiz to "They are begging to fight me" and "I won't be rushed into it". You'll see the tone has changed a lot.
My theory is that his handlers know Wilder's fan base will disappear with a loss and if he's not a title holder so they are going to try to ride it out as long as they can fighting the likes of Breazeale. With Fury they picked him thinking he was finished and that he's not a puncher so at worse fighting in America they at least won't lose on points. He sort of needed that re-match because the public saw him lose the fight but Fury went with a deal with makes Wilder fans hypocritical whichever angle they go with that's not criticizing him for this $100m duck.
They knew Joshua is the meal ticket and the biggest star in the division but they also know Joshua will KO Wilder so saying his name enough will get attention but they aren't ready to role the dice yet. They figure they can squeeze some mismatches out of him before they cash him out. A humiliating KO loss derails this and it also gives DAZN a huge shot in the arm and gives Hearn bragging rights.
Personally I will be no longer paying attention to him or his fights because he is a fake. He's been selling woof tickets.
