Comments Thread For: Porter-Ugas: Judges Disagree On 10 of 12 Scored Rounds

So often in close fights, it's said there are several rounds that could go either way which will likely create disparity on the final scorecards. In the case of Shawn Porter's split decision win over Yordenis Ugas, the judges simply couldn't agree on just about anything. Porter retained his welterweight title in Saturday's hard-fought scrap with Ugas, which aired live on Fox from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. Judges Steve Morrow and Max DeLuca had the Ohio-bred boxer winning by scores of 116-112 and 115-113, respectively, overruling judge Zachary Young's dissenting card of 117-111 in favor of Ugas.

It appeared to be a knocked down in the 12th, but came from a shot to the top of Porter's head.

Even without the knockdown, Ugas won the 12th hands down.

    Hard fight to judge, though.

I rewatched it. Porter won. He was facing a bigger, stronger, taller guy--was people expecting him to go in and rumble with him all night? He fought smart but I think that it was a style we were not used to seeing Porter fight. He is a champion now he was to be smarter. he landed more punches as well.

It was without question a knockdown in the 12th. Should have been a 10-8 round for Ugas.

Had it even coming into the 9th. Then Ugas won 3 out of the last 4, which would give him the victory 115-113.

Porter was knocked down. Ugas won that fight.

Most of the rounds really weren't that difficult to score

Round 1- Porter round to me
Round 2- also a Porter round to me
Round 3- looks like an Ugas round to me
Round 4- Also an Ugas round
Round 5- I scored it for Ugas, but I can see it for Porter too
Round 6- I scored it For Porter, but I can see it for Ugas as well
Round 7- Most people scored this round for Ugas, I scored it for Porter but I see why others didn't
Round 8- Ugas round to me
Round 9- Porter Round to me
Round 10- Porter round to me
Round 11- I scored it for Ugas, but I can see Porter winning it as well
Round 12- Ugas round to me

Both guys won 4 rounds clearly.

So really rounds 5 and 6 you can have switched for Ugas or Porter.
Round 7 and 11 could have gone to either guy based on your preference. Other rounds looked pretty clear to me

How did you guys see it?

Ugas deserves to lose. He acted like he already won each round simply by walking Porter down. He failed to break Porter down and take the fight to the champ. He controlled the fight but failed to let his hands go. He deserves credit for doing half the job IMO, and deserved to lose for not doing more.

I had Ugas winning 115-113...HOWEVER I can't say he "TOOK IT FROM THE CHAMP" also Ugas should be upset with UGAS! He did a lot of Posturing and Taunting during the fight instead of letting his hands go and leaving NO DOUBT. He stopped going to the Body after doing so effectively early in the fight which was clearly Salas gameplan which was the right game plan! I thought that would pay off later in the fight and it would've had he stuck with it.

So yes I thought he won but I also thought he could've done MORE to really secure this one. Just way too much Posturing and waiting for Counters Only when he could've pushed the action more
