Comments Thread For: Spence's Coach: Whatever Garcia Brings, We'll Have The Answer!

Derrick James, head trainer for IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence, is very pleased with his boxer's performance in training camp. In his most high profile fight, Spence will defend his belt against four division world champion Mikey Garcia. The contest takes place in less than two weeks, on March 16th, at AT&T Stadium in Las Vegas.

As great as Mikey is, he simply doesn’t have the style to beat Spence. The only 2 fighters at 147 that will be competitive against Spence are Crawford and Thurman and that’s because they both have excellent foot work and speed with power. Mikey doesn’t have the foot speed or power to keep Spence off of him. The first 3 rounds will be exciting and close. But by the 5th, it will start getting ugly. This fight will not go the distance. Mikey will be Spence’s most skilled opposition, but this is boxing and there are weight divisions for a reason. And if Spence shows off his real skills and box, and force Mikey to come to him, Mikey will be forced to lunge in a lot and reach. As Big George Foreman used to say, you don’t chase a puncher around the ring. So Mikey can’t win this fight coming forward or going backwards. Props for him taking this fight. I will look forward to him fighting Lomo. The welterweight division is simply to big for him.

Derrick James is absolutely delusional. I like Spence but saying that his fights are one sided affairs no matter how great the opponents are is absolutely ridiculous. HE HASNT FOUGHT ANYONE GREAT! His biggest win is Brook who while is a very good win I would never call him great. He also just played the weight game. Errol needs the top of the division. He better hope he outclasses Mikey Garcia but who knows if he beats him while looking vulnerable maybe the top fights at 147 will come easier. If he loses it's going to be hard to get that career back on track.

"I just think Errol is so hungry and he has the ability to be great. The way he adjusts in the fights and he really sets the tone. Most of all, his fights have been one-sided. Regardless who he's fighting against, how great they are, what their record is, what they said they'll do to him, he's just been able to have one-sided affairs. Hopefully we can have the same thing in this fight," James said.

Crawford won't just compete with Spence; he's going to school him.
