My Message to "Woeful" Danny Williams: "Retire son. You are Done"
danny williams09.07.06 - By Jeff Allinson: After witnessing Saturday nights truly awful performance by Danny Williams (36-5, 29 KO's), in losing his return fight with Matt Skelton (20-1, 18 KO's), my personal opinion is that he needs to get out of the game now, after proving yet again that poor preparation, inconsistency and a downright sloppy attitude are his real trade marks.
Harsh words? Too right, and he deserves them as well. I can imagine his trainer (the always well prepared Jim McDonnell) went through Danny like a dose of salts after the fight, a contest that Danny simply was not in from the start. Skelton, who by his own admittance, is hardly a swift and skilfull boxer, was streets ahead in every department. He moved well for a man of his weight, used the jab effectively, threw combinations and proved that he had learned from their previous encounter. Sure, he tried his dirty tactics from time to time, but the referee was having none of it and quickly seperated the fighters when things got a little ugly, so Skelton reverted to boxing and supprised me by doing it pretty well, something I never thought I'd hear myself say! He may get a shot at Valuev, and good luck to him, he deserves it. But what about Williams?
Danny just has to hang em up after this utterly pathetic showing. He will never be a World Champion in a million years. Sure Danny can box when he wants to, can **** when he wants to and can perform well when he wants to.....But that is the problem. It is only when he feels like it. He has no consistency or mental strength and often prepares poorly. My God, I used to be super critical of Frank Bruno, but Bruno would have wiped the floor with Danny.
Williams came in at 288lbs. Utterly ridiculous. He approached the fight firing big words about how he would knock out Skelton in the fourth round. Talk is cheap, Danny. You promised everything and delivered nothing, as per usual. He led us to believe the extra weight would help him in his quest to Knock out Matt, and like an idiot, I believed him, but all it did was make him into an even more ponderous, plodding pathetic excuse for a professional. In my opinion, he needs to get down to about 210, or 220lbs, maximum, but there isn't a snowballs chance in hell of that happening on a regular basis, is there?
The fact is, Williams just isn't good enough at World level, either. Every time he has stepped up, he has gotten put back in his place. Forget the Tyson triumph, sure, Danny won, and won fair and square, but Iron Mike was a pile of scrap by that time. Samil Sam slapped Danny all over the place; So did Vitali Klitschko. Wlad would Box Danny's ears off, Rahman would do a number on Danny, (so would the "often out of shape" James Toney, too). I dont like to see fighters used as punching bags, and that is what will happen to Danny, if he hangs around much longer. He needs to get out, and get out now, whilst he has his health. He is a nice bloke, and I am sure he's made a decent living out of the sport, but he is not, never was, or ever will be good enough to make it as a World Champion....Retire, son. Your done!
