Comments Thread For: Teofimo Lopez, Top Rank in Pursuit of WBC Title in 2019

As Mikey Garcia (39-0, 30KOs) continues to prepare for his March 16 challenge of unbeaten welterweight titlist Errol Spence Jr., there remains heavy interest as to what his plans are with the World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight title which remains in his possession. For now, the WBC is taking a wait-and-see approach-as BoxingScene.com previously reported-to give Garcia a chance to decide at which weight he chooses to campaign after the Spence fight.

This is what needs to happen. All those years building up Loma vs Mikey, now that Mikey most likely ruined that, they need to call an audible and replace it with something, but something now, not something they have to start all over from scratch building up. If Loma vs Mikey cant happen because Mikey doesnt want it or because he went to Haymon (not that those things are mutually exclusive. In fact often, one is the real reason for the other), then they need to find a way to do Loma vs a Top Rank version of Mikey, and Teofimo in Q1 2020 vs Loma, or the end of 2019, is the clear and obvious choice for the closest thing.

Who knows, Teofimo might eventually turn out better than Mikey. Time will tell. But to me, it already looks like one hell of a fight! This aint Floyd-Canelo, not at all. That was at a catchweight, this will be at 135. Canelo had cement feet especially weight drained, Teofimo has great feet. Canelo had a very one-speed style back then, Teofimo has all speeds. Canelo had a very one-note style back then, Teofimo has a mix of every style. Canelo was mostly a plodding puncher at that age, fast hands but slow in every other way, and didn't mix up the speeds very well. Teofimo is slick, he's quick, he's agile. Even to this day, if Canelo fought a Crawford, a Loma, a prime Lara again, a Floyd, his size, in their primes, he would probably struggle. And obviously he and his team thought he'd struggle vs prime GGG otherwise why wait for him to decline? Teofimo, he has that natural agility that he could actually trade points evenly with those guys, trade head shots evenly with a Lara for example if they were the same size, rather than having to rely only on left hooks to the body like Canelo did as Lara exited because Canelo was too slow of foot and unagile to land many headshots on Lara on the move. Canelo has never punched well on the move, but Teofimo can do that.

It's just a totally different thing. Loma vs Teofimo is already one of the best matchups in boxing. By the end of 2019 or Q1 2020, it might not be a huge commercial fight, but it's going to be a great fight for the hardcore fans and some casuals too by that point, and the fight both of them need at that point in their careers. If the fight ends up as good as I expect, they may find themselves raking in two or three times as much money for the rematch and trilogy, but first things first, they need to make the first one while Loma is still in his prime in order to maintain and grow fan interest in a potential rematch and trilogy, or whatever comes after, any other big fights that could come after. Otherwise, you get reduced PPV sales for the rematch like we saw with GGG-Canelo, and will certainly see with May-Pac II if that happens. When you wait too long to make the first, the 2nd and 3rd suffer significantly. Hopefully TR doesn't repeat the mistakes of others. This is a great fight and anything prior to March 2020 is the perfect time to do it.

Lopez winning a title this year will be more impressive than what Loma did. I say this because of the age. Loma stayed in the amateurs all those years perfecting his craft, had a like 6 fights that should have been counted as pro fights and turned pro at 25 when he was pretty much in his prime. Loma at 25 was an experienced fighter. Lopez turned pro at younger age and still has many more years to improve by the time he hits 25.

bob arum should force mikey to fight lopez after he gets destroyed by spence lol imagine having to go from one devastating puncher and then drop two weight classes and fight another one. lopez will be the number 1 contender for the wbc belt before the end of the year and they can set up a fight with mikey in the second half of this year! mikey must fight lopez or get stripped of the wbc 135lb belt!!!

              Dear Mikey Garcia,

Please vacate the WBC Lightweight title ASAP! You know you can't make 135 anymore, and it probably has been a struggle for the past 2 years! Go do you, and let others eat too!

I know you want to have leverage for "just in case," but Boxing needs Vasily Lomachenko vs. Teofimo Lopez in 2019! Teofimo will outgrow 135 soon, and maybe you can fight him @ 140? I know it's painful to make a move that actually assists Top Rank Promotions, but do it for the sport!

PBC Welterweight, and Jr. Welterweight divisions are on fire! You don't need that WBC Lightweight title! Let it go! It's a fine line between justice and pettiness! Don't cross it! Wish you luck on March 16th!

              Sincerely,

              Bronx2245

Teofimo vs Campbell for the vacant WBC title would be bad ass
