  • Gervonta Davis AMA

Credit to Reddit & MDA123 for setting up the AMA. If you do not know, Reddit routinely does "Ask Me Anything" with professional boxers on occasion. I try to post the Questions & Answers here as soon as I can from time to time.

    This took place on 2/6/2019.

What is your walking around weight when you're not in camp?

    135. I'm disciplined. Nah, I'm like 140-143
    And your fight night weight?

    Probably 139-140.

Can you list your top 5 favorite boxers of all time?

My top 5 favorite are Floyd Mayweather, Sugar Ray Leonard, Sweet Pea, Aaron Pryor, who else...that's it.

Are you a fan of any active boxers (not the one's you are friends with) out there right now?

Like, "oh ****, xxxx is fighting tonight I gotta catch that fight".

Yeah, a lot of up and coming fighters I'm watching. There's an amateur I'm watching, his name's Keyshawn Davis. He's trying to make the Olympics. A lot of up and coming fighters that I watch.
How is your relationship with Floyd Mayweather right now?

It's cool. It's good. We on good terms.
Can you **** Ryan Garcia up for us please and thank you

When the time is right, when he grow, we'll see down the line. I'm willing to fight Ryan when he matures out

    Hi Tank.

I hope you don't this is too much of a "hardball question."

Fans and journalists alike all agree that you are a supreme talent. Your fights are must-see TV. However, your resume is lacking the big win over a top fighter so far. No disrespect to the guys you've beat so far, but they've all been fighters who can be described as good or very good, but it still feels like you haven't fully "stepped up" to the top level yet. When will you take that next step up? We all really, really, really want to see that.

Good luck in your career champ.

Look at Lomachenko's resume, he's got 12 damn fights. Who has he fought? Besides Gary Russell. And Pedraza that he went 12 rounds with that I knocked out, but that's your P4P #1.
    Bonus burn:
*So, when will you step up though?
    (same poster in the OP)

Who won these fights in your opinion?

    GGG Canelo 1

    GGG Canelo 2

    Fury Wilder

GGG and Canelo 2, I think Canelo beat him. Wilder vs. Fury, I think it was a tough fight, could've went either way. Hopefully we get the rematch and they solve it.

Does Floyd want you to fight Loma? Would you move up in weight to fight him?

I don't know what Floyd wants, but it don't matter to me to fight Lomachenko. Listen, anyone at 130-135, anyone that's coming up from 126, they all can get it.
Does Broner ever stress you out?

Yeah, he stress me out sometimes man. Talk too damn much.
You've had trouble making 130 before. Do you plan to stay there for now, or is a move to 135 in your future after this fight?

I made 130 my last fight. I only missed weight one time, what the hell. I think I was 29 or 28 in my last fight. I'm willing to fight at 130, 135, hopefully probably in the next 2-3 years fight at 40. Doesn't matter.
Do you have any passions outside of boxing? Like, woodshop, fixing up cars, etc...

    A **** star. I got a deal coming too.
*If the tone isn't clear here, he was definitely joking. He was laughing, as were his PR people in the background.

What fighters do you want to box in the imminent future?

It's a lot of good up and coming fighters that we could make that PPV fight. I'm looking forward to all the up and coming fighters. I don't have a specific name.
Have you ever been in the ring with Floyd for sparring? If so, what was that like?

Nah, never been in the ring with Floyd. I done watched him knock some people out in the gym, but that's about it. I've been close to the ring but that's about it. I've never shared the ring besides shadowboxing with him.
At what point in your life did you know that you really had what it took to be a world-level boxer? I'm sure you always had confidence in yourself, but was there a moment where you realized, "****, I can really do this?"

Probably when I first won my national tournament at 10 years old. I felt like I had what it takes.
If you could fight any boxer throughout history, who would it be?

    Mike Tyson in his prime.
Whats the hardest you’ve ever been punched? Are you more cautious now because of it?

Probably in the gym. I got caught with a hook in my last fight against Cuellar. I been hit by some tough guys. I'm always cautious, but yeah, in a sense.
What is an average day like for you in training camp? Walk us through your schedule, meals, exercises, etc.

This camp, I train early in the morning. I wake up 8 or 9, go and run. I train probably 10 or 11, ate breakfast before training, then train, and then before like 5 or 6 oclock I'm in bed, knocked out asleep.
Gervonta, you're one of the more physically gifted boxers, with great speed and power. How obvious was this at a young age?

Well, my coaches always challenged me to the bigger fighters in the gym, so I was always...cause I was so bad, the kids around my size were good, but I was always the one that pushed harder in the gym. So I guess right there in the gym maybe.
As an Insider please tell us why won't Adrien Broner throw more punches?

That's something you'd have to ask him, not me
Tank would you rather fight a Tyson Fury sized Lomachenko or 10 Lomachenko sized Tyson Furys?

Well, would I be the same size or would I be bigger? I believe I'd sleep both of em.
What size gloves are you using for bags/pads/sparring?

    Different sizes. 16, 14, 10, 8, sometimes 18. Depends
You sometimes show frustration with Mayweather promotions. Do you see a long term future with a different promoter? A man of your talents should be landing big fights.

    Promotion-wise, I believe that I'm good. I'm good.
Can we expect a fight against Tevin Farmer this year?

I don't know. Hopefully we could get that chump in the ring, knock his eyes straight!
How important is having “0” at the end of your record? Do you think too much focus is placed on the 0 these days, even if it means fighters taking less risks, or waiting until a fight against a particular fighter seems more “winnable?”

It means a lot. When you don't wanna lose it...you know, I'm not trying to ever lose. I don't think anyone around me is trying to lose, so I think that 0 means a lot. You do want to fight people that bring the best out of you, and fight the best out there.
What are the unusual challenges of facing another southpaw like Cuellar or Farmer?

Man, I'd smoke Tevin Farmer like a blunt. Tell him I said I'd smoke him like some cookie, some sour diesel.
    Why's your momma so beautiful?

    Hi momma!
Hi Gervonta is it true that you do not train outside of your training camps? Could you please give some insight as to why?

    Thanks, and good luck champ.

Who said that? I'm probably not in the gym as heavy as I am in camp, but I'm in the gym.
How often do you contemplate the physical consequences that may result from boxing and how long do you plan on continuing your career as a pro fighter?

I don't try to think about that because that's when stuff happens. When I want to retire, probably around like 29-30. That's what me and Al got planned, to retire when I'm 29-30. Hopefully I'll be up some Ms, some M&Ms. I'm trying to make another baby.
What is your daily diet like? How different is your daily diet compared to your training camp diet?

In camp, I eat a lot of salmon and broccoli. Outside of camp, a lot of stuffed chicken, chicken alfredo, things like that. Baked potatoes, lasagna. I'm hungry by the way.
    What's your p4p list currently?

I'd say GGG and Canelo, Mikey, I'd say Errol after this fight too.
Who’s the best opponent you’ve faced in sparring or as an amateur?

I had a lot of great sparring, so I don't know the best. Lorenzo Simpson and Malik Hawkins.
What is your opinion on the Badou Jack fight with his head being cut and his corner men not stopping.

Would you want your corner team to throw in the towel if you had such a deep cut?

It wasn't that deep at first if I'm not mistaken. They should've put a lot of grease on there before, but sometimes in a fight, there's some fighters that tell you they wanna finish but some see a little blood and go crazy. I wouldn't have told my coach to stop it.
It's clear that you have a real good skill set for pro boxing. What's something in particular that you feel you have even more room to grow in, boxing ability wise?

Everything, overall. I want to grow as a boxer and as a person.
    Predictions for Spence Vs Garcia?

That's a tough fight. Both of them are my guys. I love the Garcias, I love Spence. I'm a fan, ready to watch, tune in, see a knockout.
Who was the boxer that influenced your style the most?

I think Floyd, Sweet Pea, and Aaron Pryor. That's who my coach told me to focus on.
Do you sometimes lift weigths ? If so what exercices ?

How often do you do push ups ?

Not really lift weights, but I have a strength coach. We don't really lift weights.
What music you been playing lately?

    A bunch of Kirk Franklin.
What did you make of Eddie Hearn’s offer to join DAZN?

    I think it was cute.

      Good stuff!

Though referencing Lomachenko only having 12 fights is ******. How many current or former champions has he faced in those 12 fights? Dude skipped the developing phase and went right to the top. Granted, he was older than most that start out so he didn't have time to waste, but he has GRJ/Pedraza/Linares/Walters/Martinez/Sosa/Rigo on his resume'. Look at that instead of how few fights he has. Fair point that Lomachenko has also faced smaller fighters.....BUT, last time I checked, it wasn't him who didn't want that smoke. If Davis is serious about that fight, then he needs to let his handlers know. I don't get why he wouldn't fight Lomachenko. Not like Lomachenko destroyed Pedraza or Linares, and I highly doubt he destroys Davis. It will be a competitive fight that Lomachenko likely wins a decision. Big deal, that fight will do more good than harm to Davis.

Yeah, this is the second time he's had an interview question where Lomachenko was never mentioned, and he still finds a way to bring his name up.

The last time Lomachenko called out Davis on twitter, was back in December 2017. This was during the "so-called Floyd call-out". That took 5 seconds to search.

Not to mention, Lomachenko was fighting at 130 lbs at that time. If you got a problem with a 130 champion calling out another 130 champion, that doesn't make any sense at all.

            19 Dec 2017

@FloydMayweather It would have been an honor to fight you in your prime but I’m not talking about you. Please stop hiding your fighter.
            20 Dec 2017

Definitely want Mikey fight @FloydMayweather .TY for smart suggestion. One day when you let me fight your guys, this will be me celebrating

And what’s your point? Just because it was in 2017 doesn’t mean anything. Tank can mention Loma just as Loma mentioned him. There is no difference.

Your point is moot. Davis ties everything into Lomachenko when none of it even mentioned him. Loma calling him out was when they were in the same division and both champions. Davis isn't even calling out Lomachenko, he's just bringing his name up.

Although... I guess I understand, considering he's getting a lot of flack for ducking Loma in the first place. That's probably why.
