Yeah, but him going after Davis with the other options presented to hm makes me think this wasn't a cash out. He legitimately thought he could take Davis to deep waters and drown him. HIGHLY unlikely but that's what he felt.

But Tank is a beast who would have done bad bad things to him.

Possible, but he told Haymon himself he wanted Davis when the fight wasn't even presented to him. So he didn't even know the type of money he would have received for that fight. I fail to see why he would get more for Davis than say someone like GRJ. Not like Davis has ever headlined or a card or is a star....yet.

Either way, we could both agree him pulling out saved a lot of unnecessary punishment.

I wish Mares the best and I enjoyed watching his fights but he needs to retire and be with his family!! I'm pretty sure he can still have an impact on boxing by being a trainer or a boxing analyst.

Yeah exactly. It’s not like there’s any career defining fights or life changing paydays out there for him. He’s had a very good career, and has a good job as an analyst. Hang them up and enjoy the rest of your life. I never wanna see fighters just keep on fighting until there’s nothing more to give. It happens way too often in this sport...

So the elbow injury was originally the reason why he pulled out of the fight, but now it's retina detachment. I think the first reason was what had others including Davis thinking he faked an injury to pull out of the fight. The timing was all coincidental when we learned that Davis was going to make weight, then the report comes out that Mares pulled out of fight cause of an undisclosed injury, then the undisclosed injury was cited as an elbow injury he suffered during sparring, then davis and others came at mares saying he faked an injury and got scared then mares had got in an instagram feud with davis saying he will fight him in the street which lead more people to believe that mares did indeed fake an injury since how can fight davis in a street fight if he supposedly got injured or why didn't mares just postpone the fight to recover from that elbow injury. so here we are on the "real reason" why mares had pulled out of the fight is due to suffering a retina detachment. people wanted to see copies of the x-rays of the elbow injury. we didn't. we got an edited video of his visit to the eye dr and post procedure. there was so much speculation everything just got out of hand and it made mares look like the cop out.
