I was at this fight and it still remains my all-time favorite moment in boxing and favorite live event attended. Being a huge Marquez fan since the 90's (I remember I was like theee Marquez fan online if you ever went to maxboxing back then you'd know. I was convinced he'd be one of the greatest Mexican fighters ever and a generational great)
I'd been to the previous fights. This fight for some reason I was certain Marquez would get the decision and even get a fair shake because of the backlash from fight III. I hadn't thought of a KO but was convinced the last two fights were robberies. I was nervous as **** in the 5th round and really up until the KO because this was a completely different fight. Usually Marquez had control barring the occasional Pacquaio explosion but this one nobody had control and that was a Pacquaio fight.
Marquez had been a great fighter for so long and had been so overlooked. He knew he needed the official win and he really deserved it after previous robberies. He got one of the most iconic KO's in history and one of the greatest wins of the modern era that night. I felt it was poor taste from Mayweather fans to try and make it a Pacquaio and Floyd thing and they really tried to detract from Marquez' great win with photoshops of Floyd being the one doing the KO but in reality Floyd never really tried hard enough to make the fight happen until after this fight when Pacquaio was clearly completely faded. Like I said they tried to make it a Floyd moment but it didn't quite work that way and Marquez got the credit his talent and career had deserved all those years.
I think this was probably the best series of the last 30 years or so and fights I, II & IV were highlight fights for their generation. I think fight II was them at their best and was probably the nicest looking action but fight IV was the most dramatic. I think fight IV is the standout win of the era (though I felt Marquez-Pacquaio III was the best performance of the series by Marquez), the best KO and one of the iconic moments but there's been a few 21st century fights I think were "better fights" like Trinidad-Vargas, Morales-Barrera I, Marquez-Vazquez III and Castillo-Corrales I. I think those are the best fights of the 21st century but this is certainly top 10-12 along with fights like I, II, Gatti-Ward I, Marquez-Diaz I, Barrera-Morales III, Marquez-Vazquez II. In fact I think it was maybe the only "great fight" from 2009 until now.
