What does “PURSE BID” mean?? Boxing experts help

Eddie Hearns was saying that if wilder and fury goes to purse bid then he’s gonna bid for it and it will get shown on sky sports?

But I thought Tyson fury signed to BT sports? So how can that fight be shown on sky sports? I’m confused

I hope that does actually happen, the thought of fury vs wilder being on sky sports makes me laugh my head off, frank warrens face if that happens.

Tyson fury doesn’t sctually have a contract, he is like Whyte. He’s generally loyal to frank warren and therefore BT though - but isn’t restricted. Same as wilder, who is a free agent too.

The split is decided upfront, say 60:40 and then rival promoters bid an amount of money (the purse) the fighters will share. The promoter with the highest bid gets the right to stage the fight, their choice of location etc. The promoter takes the gate receipts. The promoter and takes the risk that the gate money will be less than the purse bid, but gets the profit if the gate receipts are higher.

See also rule 2.25 of the WBC. If a boxer has a contractual restriction that prevents them participating in a purse bid they have to inform the WBC beforehand. If they are restricted the WBC may treat them as being unavailable for the fight.

any promoter in the world can bid an undisclosed amount to be written in an envelope and then each promoter sends a representative to a country e.g. i think it is panama for wbc, to give the envelope to the sanctioning body.

fighters get the money , split between champion and challenger predetermined by sanctioning body

promoter with the highest bid wins rights to the fight, organises the tv , venue etc and keeps all the revenue

Yeah a purse bid knocks out any allegiances to TV networks. Wilder vs Fury 2 wont go to purse bids, they'll work out a deal. It only happens when you get 2 competing networks going at it, like Hooker vs Sauedo think was the last big one.
