Comments Thread For: The Seized Opportunity of Eleider Alvarez, Take Two

By Cliff Rold - It would be fair to ask if maybe, just maybe, it was him all along. There will never be, can't be, an answer. Whether Eleider Alvarez (24-0, 12 KO) goes on to reign as a light heavyweight titlist for the next decade, or loses the WBO belt back immediately to Sergey Kovalev (32-3-1, 28 KO) this Saturday night (ESPN+, 12 AM EST), what might have been for the now 34-year old Colombian will always be conjecture...

Kovalev in 2018 was arguably as good or better than Kovalev in 2016. The author is just framing it purposefully to try to overhype a certain American boxer that many in the media like to hype up by acting like 33 and 34 year old Kovalev was peak Kovalev, when scientific studies show that is years past most athlete's primes. The real question the writer should be asking is, could Alvarez OR that certain boxer have beaten PRIME Kovalev (Cleverley, BHop, Silakh, Capparrello, and before)? Because the certain boxer in question arguably lost to the past prime 2016 version, so I doubt he would have beaten the prime version. Even Chilemba almost beat the past prime version so it's not saying much for Alvarez or the certain boxer in question that they beat him (in Alvarez's case, "beat" him in the other cases).

2016 Kovalev is past prime Kovalev but 2018 Kovalev is better than 2016 Kovalev?

Kovalev's been on the down-slide since the 1st Ward fight, if not before and I can't see him getting revenge here. This could be his swan-song unless he needs to top up his retirement fund against one of the 3 eastern European world champs at 175lbs first.

He also said Kovalev prime was last year where he only faced Alvarez so his post didn't make sense

I never thought Kovalev was elite. What's his best win? A 49 year old Hopkins? Nathan Cleverly? Jean Pascal? When it came down to nut-cuttin time, fighting the elite of the division, he's 0-3. He's not that strong, his gas take empties after the 7th or 8th round. If you look at Kovalev and Alvarez standing next to each other, Alvarez is the much bigger, stronger man. Bigger head, bigger shoulders, bigger hands, and more muscle. Kovalev has always seemed like a front-runner, who pounded b and c level fighters. I'm taking Alvarez by resounding KO... again.

Cliff Rold says Alvarez hasn't gotten many opportunities, but he also writes that Alvarez took step aside money from Adonis twice. I don't blame Alvarez, since his team likely got more than $100,000 both times. $100,000 is probably on the low end of estimates considering how much he would have made fighting Adonis. That being said, I can't feel too bad for Alvarez not getting big fights if he didn't take two fights with Adonis.
