I know of one man in all of boxing history whose fame was comparable but in actuality he doesn't even come close to Ali.
Demokrates was champion in the first century around the time Jesus would be about 25. Demo was from the Roman Empire and was a Roman Pyx champion. An Olympian not a gladiator, Olympians were like pros today while Gladiators were much less so. Demo was famous from Africa to Japan by way of the Silk Road.
The entire ancient world knew his name and his feats. He was even more famous than the emperors of the major ancient empires, Rome, China, Persia, and Aksume!
Everyone knew Demo in the first century similar to how everyone knows Ali now, but, the first century ancient world is really tiny compared to Ali's.
So in that regard Ali is without a doubt alone in terms of fame.
