  • Comments Thread For: Espinoza: PPV Is A Useful Tool, But It Should Be Used Sparingly

Stephen Espinoza understands the angle Oscar De La Hoya and Eddie Hearn have taken in predicting the death of pay-per-view boxing. Showtime's president of sports and event programming just hopes consumers realize it's a gimmick to promote the development of DAZN, the new streaming service with which De La Hoya and Hearn are affiliated. One of DAZN's significant sales strategies is pushing that it costs $9.99 per month, yet it will offer fight fans pay-per-view events on occasion for the relatively low cost of a subscription service.

In nearly three months you have three PPV's almost back to back worth close to $225. That's almost 2 years worth of DAZN subscriptions! 2 YEARS! That's a lot. And I fear that won't be the last PPV of the year.

I'm all for growing the sport. investing in your fav fighters but come on. $75 for Pac vs Broner is crazy.
PPV is a useful tool when the price is reasonable.

With regard to the UK fights , Hearn actually said ppv was dead at the US price point. ie Showtime could reduce the price to more UK levels and grow the market. I know they flex the price point sometime but its still very high and reflected in te volumes bar a few mega fights.

Too many poor fights at full price.

It has to die, for the most part its probably dead.

One PPV these days is nearly the cost of DAZN for 1 year...

If they get more fighters that I like to see on there, I'll get it. Say Usyk and Loma on DAZN, I'll buy for the year ahead.

I agree. I thought PPV would die with more streaming but this isn't the case. I don't mind PPV but the prices need to be more like $25-50 per card.

I also want to see the PPV cards really tailored to the fans by putting on STRONG cards with meaningful fights. Make sure the PPV guys fight at least 1 time a year on regular TV.

What I mean is give us like a Floyd/Ghost whitewash on Fox, mix that with like a Spence/Thurman unification semi main then have Floyd V the winner on the PPV. Then have like the PPV opener be the next guy who wis being positioned to face the champ.

Theres a lot of factors that contribute to PPVs reduction in boys. Mosreso in the states. The biggest problem with PPV is the price. Its oversaturated with fights that don't belong on PPV, fighters commanding huge purses that promoters can only stage PPV in order for them to turn a profit and also the split of the total take(PPV, Gate). Networks commanding the lions share pushes the price up on PPV. High prices, low buy rate.

That business model is dead or dying not necessarily PPV.

We can watch Canelo beat on Fielding's for $10 a month on DAZN then we can watch him face GGG for $10 extra on DAZN PLUS!! Its gonna be something like that but we will have to pay extra for those marquee matchups. Especially when ppl are shelling out $60-70 for fights that dont belong on PPV to begin with. Its be more beneficial for promoters if the networks didnt have such a huge split.. streaming apps can affect that n if they do that they would be in a better position to lower the prices to increase buys.
