Comments Thread For: A Realistic Wish List for the Year Ahead

By Cliff Rold - Whether you're covering up from the cold on the top of the planet, or heading to the beach to the south, for every fight fan there is only one new season the New Year truly brings. The first of every year is the first day of the new boxing season. Fight fans already know a little bit about what to expect from 2019. We are a bit more than a week away from Manny Pacquiao-Adrien Broner, a little less than a month from Eleider Alvarez-Sergey Kovalev II, and a couple months out from Errol Spence-Mikey Garcia...

I was feeling like Spence vs Pacquiao was in the cards just a day ago, but seeing Floyd & Manny running into each other at a NBA game again made me think about how their first fight came about. So not so sure about that one now cuz idk if anything with Floyd is ever just a coincidence.

I am not sure what commitment and seriousness Paquiao have to fight Errol Spence when he said he was open to this fight. About Mayweather, we all know he is unpredictable and a box of surprises when no one expect it and is always surprise all of us. I have a slightly feel is a possibly about the rematch of Paquiao vs Mayweather. Let's see what happen.

Doe's anyone actually know what's going on with Andrew Selby? He hasn't defended his British title for over two & a half years & his EBU title fight with Vincent Legrande has been on & off for over a year. Yes a fight with Charlie Edwards sells well in the UK, but the sport should be about more than just money & Selby just hasn't done enough to deserve it!

Yeah, it's been a very frustrating year or two as a Selby fan. I know one guy in the camp who said that you just couldn't get him in the gym and had gone AWOL. The interview at the end of the Rosales fight was pretty telling.

A few of us had hoped that the Selby-Warrington event would've given him the buzz back but we all know how that ended!

I'm hoping this is the year that he gets back on track and stays busy. He is arguably the most naturally talented fighter in the UK and certainly in Wales.

If Pac doesn't beat Broner impressively, he's most likely gonna try to get through Spence to secure the rematch.

And Pac probably hasn't watched that much tape on Spence and just sees him as an inexperienced fighter that just comes forward.

Keith Thurman would get a pacquiao fight before Errol.

              Pacquiao ain't fighting spence.

Whyyyyy can't we just get Spence Crawford or Thurman to fight. Manny is 40 ffs and fought everyone in his prime didn't he set a good enough example?!

A Booming, Divided Boxing Business in 2019
                  ESPN
                  January 10, 2019

There's Premier Boxing Champions, which has output deals with Fox/FS1 and Showtime. Top Rank signed an exclusive deal in 2017 to air their cards on ESPN, which runs through 2025. And DAZN, a nascent streaming network, has partnerships with Matchroom Sports and Golden Boy Promotions...

"[Haymon] has really been the trailblazer. Love him or hate him, he really helped to elevate the sport, bringing [an] ESPN in, bringing a Fox in," Schaefer told ESPN.com in late December. "Lets face it, with Fox being a totally free over-the-air network, showing the kind of commitment that they're showing to the sport, we saw that with the Charlo fights. It's amazing the kind of assets Fox put behind it..."

Every major broadcast entity that is now involved in boxing is currently aligned with a promoter. They are now, in essence, tied together at the hip. By signing with a Top Rank, for instance, you are basically signing on with ESPN. Currently there is an arms race of sorts as rival factions look to strengthen their own stables and their programming lineup...

"This is just the business, it will mean that certain fights are difficult to make," explained Hearn, who is under pressure himself to make a Joshua-Wilder fight sooner rather than later.

"If Golovkin comes to DAZN, I'm sure we'll get Canelo against Golovkin III," Hearn continued. "If he doesn't, then we'll probably never see that fight. So that would be a shame. Will you ever see Lomachenko against Mikey Garcia? I very much doubt it. It's a fight I'd love to see. Will you see Errol Spence against Terence Crawford? I very much doubt it. That's another fight I'd love to see."

That sound you hear? It's the collective groaning of boxing fans across the world.

"It's not that anyone's really trying to scuff up the sport or be difficult, it's just their jobs," Hearn went on to say. "Haymon's got to deliver for Showtime and Fox, I've got to deliver for DAZN, Bob's got to deliver for ESPN.

"So they won't move their talent, nor will we."

From what I understand Chris Sanigar won a second purse bid and has the rights to promote the Legrand fight for the EBU title.
However, Selby will instead choose to fight in a WBC final eliminator against Julio Cesar Martinez.
