No, I don't get that you don't understand what Ethnicity is.

By definition, the fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition.

Broner
National Tradition - American (he lives in America)
Cultural Tradition - American (Not many African rituals I would assume)
Social Group - Americans (Do you think he is hanging out with Africans or Americans?)

Not one thing there is African. Some of his ancestry roots are from Africa (probably mixed in there too), but that is it.

What cultural tradition from Africa do you think Broner practices?

Who do you think he hangs out with (Social Group), Americans or Africans?

I can tell you now with very high probability, he is probably practicing about 10 American cultural and social norms and hanging out with Americans right now.

I wouldn't use a government form to determine the answer to this question as it has it's flaws.

But to your point, the question on the census is Ethnic "Origin", not current Ethnicity. As current ethnicity is understood to be American.

The US census has a lot of issues. More complex questions on the census would clarify that when they are asking about race are they asking about color, and that when they are asking about ethnicity are they asking about national origins, familial or ancestral origins etc.

You are right, if you are saying Broner has an Ethnic Origin from Africa, but his current ethnic group, is American. A person isn't forever bound to what his great grandfathers ethnic background was before.

Meaning, I might have ethnic ancestry going back to Germany for 100 years, and then to Japan before that. At some point, the ethnicity changes (my social traditions, groups and culture), but not the ethnic origin.
