We have a new year...and in boxing that means a new year of controversial decisions. So looking back at 2018, what were the top 5 controversial decisions in 2018?
Doesn't have to be big fights, just decisions that you thought were horrendous and deserve the title 'robbery'.
1. Wilder vs Fury:
Official Judging-
Robert Tapper 112 - 114
Phil Edwards 113 - 113
Alejandro Rochin 115 - 111
I think this is an obvious choice, I personally scored the fight 115-111 Fury and when I heard "we have a split decision" I knew exactly what they were going to do. The 115-111 Card for Wilder was absolutely awful.
2. Mairis Briedis vs Noel Gevor:
Official Judging-
Hubert Minn 114 - 112
Steve Morrow 115 - 111
Benjamin Rendon 116 - 110
This is one of those decisions that I just can't comprehend. A clear robbery imo, I have heard of no one who thought Briedis won apart from the judges themselves. A wide and clear win for Gevor in my mind, Briedis just looked awful and I think he knew he lost.
3. Donnie Nietes vs Aston Palicte:
Official Judging-
Robert Hoyle 112 - 116
Max DeLuca 114 - 114
Daniel Sandoval 118 - 110
Fight was officially ruled a draw, but how they came to this conclusion was beyond me. I thought Palicte stole some rounds and that the HBO crew were ignoring a bit of Palicte work. But still...I had it wide for Nietes
4. Zach Parker vs Darryll Williams:
Official Judging-
Ian John Lewis 113 - 115
Steve Gray 115 - 114
Victor Loughlin 117 - 112
An undercard fight, nothing really significant and most people just ignored the awful judging. But again this is a real robbery guys. Parker was landing only a few shots per round while constantly getting backed up and peppered with hard shots and combinations. It was an ugly fight at times but still a clear cut win for Williams. Parker didn't do remotely enough to get the decision.
5. Fedor Chudinov vs Nadjib Mohammedi:
Official Judging-
Yury Koptsev 111 - 118
Joerg Milke 115 - 113
Andriy Baliasov 116 - 112
Most of Y'all heard of these two fighters mainly from their losses to known fighters. But I looked forward to this matchup, I saw them as equals, a cross roads fight. Mohammedi had a great game plan and outboxed Chudinov who looked like a stiff in this fight and he was very sloppy. Everyone who watched the fight scored it wide for Mohammedi again...except for the judges. This is actually the third WBSS/Kalle Sauerland affiliated fight on this list, that is interesting to say the least. And ofc all the big names/A-sides or home town fighters got the controversial decision in their favour
