Sam Langford: Papa Jack’s Ominous Shadow

What was it really like to have Sam Langford coming at you? On March 17, 1910, at the Jeffries Arena in Vernon, California, Fireman Jim Flynn got the answer to that question in painful, brain-scrambling fashion. So hard and true was Langford’s knockout punch, so perfectly timed, that Fireman Jim believed the fight was still on after his brief but ill-timed slumber. The pugnacious battler from Pueblo could not be convinced that his business for the day was done, even as a smiling Sam rushed around the ring and shook hands with his well-wishers. [details]

Once again, Mike Casey shows why he is a "champion quality" writer. No one besides Casey paints such a vivid picture of a distant time and place and painstakingly researches the most minute of details.

I'm not one for heaping praise upon writers or anyone; but I believe in giving the devil his due. I write a little on the side and have received some complimentary remarks and I know how much I appreciate them; but all I have to do to keep from getting a swelled head is to read one of Mike Casey's supremely articulated articles. I am a mere journeyman or 4-Round writer by comparison.

This (article) is how it's supposed to be done; anyone who says otherwise doesn't have the intellect to appreciate style and grace when they see it.

Kudos, Mr. Casey. Another superb piece of literature.

Oh, and Langford is definetly an all time great.

Great insight on the reasons why. And props to Curtis Narimatsu...he knows his stuff as well.

When he was a little boy Bill Miller used to ride on his bike delivering cigars to Sam Langford. Sam was blind by the time.
