Comments Thread For: WBC Prez To Place a Direct Focus on "Weight Control" in 2019

After qualifying 2018 as a spectacular year for boxing, the president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaiman, made it known that in 2019 the main objective will be to place a focus on the issue of weight control. Sulaiman does not like the ongoing problem of boxers sucking down weight during fight week - leading to severe health problems for several boxers.

If anything the WBC needs to focus on being less corrupt.

I agree . But that won’t happen. A third party will have to take them down.

Go back to same day weigh-ins. That will force fighters to compete in divisions that are closer to their walking around weight.

It's never going to work. Weight Cutting is the closest thing to a wicked problem that professional combat sports has. There's no easy fix.

Having the 30 day deadline that they currently have in place doesn't work because fighters will just "cram" their weight cut. Which means they'll just cut all their weight the day before, like they would for a regular weight cut, and then will rehydrate back up to what they were. So the only thing it really provides is an inconvenience.

About time they started taking measures to make sure boxers are somewhat close to being within their actual natural weight division.

Correct me if I'm wrong though...isn't the WBC's idea to just have percentage caps? Like 10-15% over or something? That is still bad.

I say there should be no more than a 10lb increase before they walk into the ring I couldn't care less if it's harmful for the boxers. If it's harmful then it means they don't belong at that weight so move the fúck on up. Simple.

                  This

Carl Froch used to walk around at about 180lbs, some of these welterweights walk around heavier than that, damn weight bullies
