Comments Thread For: Liam Williams Dominates Mark Heffron, Claims British 160 Belt

Liam Williams moved up in weight and produced a sensational showing. The Welshman, a former British champion at super-welterweight, stepped up to middleweight to take on Mark Heffron. Williams agreed to fight the previously undefeated Northerner up at 160lbs after he failed to secure an opponent for the vacant British title.

Williams fought a very nice fight. I love seeing bully punchers like Hefron get exposed and TKO'd by boxers.

The Lonsdale belt is one of the oldest recognised titles in boxing.

You realise that the states has like ..4 versions of domestic titles right?

You're right, man. 'Cos US fighters spring in as top tier fighters straight from their pro debut and don't need to work their way up or anything. Not like you have the NABF, NABA or USBA handing out regional titles or anything now, is it? And of course all the US undercards always have AAA guys squaring off, right?

Thing is, these titles are exactly what they say they are - regional titles, no-one pretends that they make you a World level boxer by themselves, but they are a stepping stone, and pretty much every British fighter that ever made it on the World stage also won the Lonsdale first, with the notable exceptions of Hamed, Benn and Eubank.

Some folk, myself included, like watching these lower level fights regardless of whether they're elite fighters or not.. doesn't have to be 5 stars (or even 3) to make it a good, exciting fight. This one happened to be a mismatch but that ain't really how it was seen going in.

All I can say if you don't enjoy watching second tier fights then don't. You ain't got some Clockwork Orange style brainwashing **** going on have ya?
