Comments Thread For: Alvarez Eyes Statement, Had Haymon Blessing For Top Rank Deal

WBO light heavyweight champion Eleider Alvarez said his multi-year, co-promotional deal with Top Rank and previous promoter Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) makes unifications “possible” assuming he wins a February 2 return bout with Sergey Kovalev at The Ford Center at The Star, the Dallas Cowboys’ training facility just outside Dallas.

No way is Alvarez the A-side vs the other champions. Stevenson even said in an interview right before the Gvozdyk fight that he probably wouldn't be interested in unifying with Alvarez afterwards because no one in Canada knows who he is. Gvozdyk is the lineal champion, while Bivol is considered the consensus #1 in the division and brings the big Russian-American fanbase in the US and Russian fanbase worldwide (Russia is one of the biggest nations on earth), so I think both of them would be A-sides against Alvarez, and that Gilberto Ramirez would be as well because he's Mexican and the establishment always favors Mexican boxers, almost as much as American star boxers.

It's a move that just makes sense. With Stevenson losing the WBC title, what good would it have done him staying at SHO/PBC? I mean there is Jack and I guess Browne, but who else? It TR he will have Ramirez, Gvozdyk and potentially Bivol. Plus getting 7 figures every fight doesn't hurt either lol.

This is definitely good news that Bob Arum and Al Haymon were able to work together to get this deal done.
Maybe now they can work together on a regular basis and give us the fights we as fans wanna see like Crawford-Spence and Lomachenko-Davis among others...

The thing is that they didn't work together. If you read this carefully you see that Michel and Top Rank worked together. They made the deal and Michel presented it to Haymon who gave it his blessing. Smart move by Al so this article by the PBC website lead writer could say he endorsed it. Whether he endorsed it or not it was going to happen. This way it looks like a win win for all parties involved.

The guys that got screwed on this deal are all the other PBC light heavyweights who have no titles to fight for and have to try to get in position for PBC to win a purse bid.

No, I highly doubt that. Alvarez just got a great deal here and I doubt Arum or anyone at TR ever reached out to Haymon.

But yes, I do hope we get those fights you listed. However

Now that Stevenson is out of the picture, PBC doesn't really have any LHW worth a damn minus Jack. So it's not really a big blow. And I believe the winner of Jack/Browne becomes the mandatory for Bivol. So that's once route for a title shot. And let's be real, Haymon hardly ever loses purse bids so they can easily put that fight on SHO. Overall, it made perfect sense for Alvarez to take that deal with TR, especially if they also sign Bivol.
