How to punch harder? Some tips from Mike Tyson himself

Mike Tyson shares advice on how to punch harder and how to deliver the lethal knockout blow

I'm still a novice when it comes to boxing. I was wondering what are some tips on how to punch harder? also, would gaining muscle mass be a good idea if you want to hit harder?

Some advice I have read recently and would like for you experts to clarify if its true or not

    TO punch harder
-Get stronger legs through squats. I read the your legs generate the power for your punches
-Focus on technique rather then hitting as hard as you can
-Try to punch as fast as you can as force is speed as well as power and velocity
-Use punching bags as often as you can, and you will eventually punch harder

Are all these true? Anything else you would like to add?

Don’t think about it to much. Punchers are born not made. They’re are huge guys that can’t crack an egg, then there’s small skinny guys like nonito donaire or kelly pavlik that are murderous punchers.
Best tip is punch THROUGH your target not at it. Train/workout hard, eat right, listen to your trainer an that’s it. Remember its not just pure power that generates a knockout, the punch you don’t see hurts the most. Accuracy, speed/timing, placement (body or head) etc all cause an opponent to get hit/hurt when/where they don’t expect it, that will amplify its damage.

You could try and things like using 18oz gloves during training that way when you fight with 10oz your punches will be effortless... a fighter named Michael bent borrowed Ali’s old 18oz gloves, trained a whole camp in them, then proceeded to knockout undefeated Tommy Morrison in the first round. Dropped him 3x.

You don't need to lift heavy weights to punch hard and too much heavy lifting can tighten you up and slow down your punches and the speed of your punch plus the weight you can turn into it determines how hard it will be. The legs add some power to punches but the main power comes from the speed of the arms and that comes from the chest and shoulders and the back of the arms. Turning the waist into blows helps too. Proper form helps and there is a right way to throw all the different punches. You can perfect your punches on the heavy bag and build up the nessessary muscles for punching by spending lots of time punching the heavy bag. Some of boxing history's hardest puncher were thin guys with thin legs who did little or no weight lifting. Tommy Hearns, SRR, Sandy Saddler, Bob Foster and many more thin guys were all great punchers. Heavily muscled guys can be great punchers as well like Tyson, Sonny Liston, GGG, Canelo etc. There is no set body type for punchers. If they have fast punches with weight behind the punch the power will be there.

I agree with Teddy Atlas theory..."Punchers Are Born Not Made!"

If it was that simple to gain power then don't you think boxers would be doing it to improve their power? Either you have it for you Don't!
