In terms of sheer entertainment nothing beats when Hamed, RJJ, Barrera, Morales and Gatti (RIP) were all active. HBO's Boxing After Dark was a great time in boxing for me, personally.
Exorbitant prices, boxers with diva personalities, marinating fights for years, convoluted titles, belts and weight divisions, trying to sanitise the sport with early stoppages, sissy fighters, horrible styles (Ward), mind-numbing fights (Mayweather), awful decisions really diminished boxing's appeal among casuals.
