Let’s first talk about what the Jermall Charlo-Willie Monroe Jr fight isn’t. It isn’t much of a fight at all. It’s a Top 5 MW against a fighter who, by all accounts, has ordinary ability. And it definitely isn’t a championship fight, as it’s being billed. Charlo holds what the WBC calls its “interim” title by virtue of his knockout victory over the great Hugo Centeno Jr in April. The fact is the title is bogus. Canelo Alvarez, is the sanctioning body's actual titleholder.
What IS Charlo-Monroe? It’s a safe way to kick off "advisor" Al Haymon's new, relationship with Fox/Fox Sports.
I’m a little uneasy that Charlo's’s next opponent probably will be another easy option, similar to his two previous opponents Jorge Sebastian Heiland and Centeno. Charlo and Haymon had better step up the opposition in 2019 or risk alienating fans. And they had better hope that fighters like Alvarez or IBF champion Daniel Jacobs are available. Is anyone excited about Charlo-Monroe outside their immediate circles? I doubt it. And while Charlo will probably help produce an entertaining scrap, we all know Monroe isn't a big challenge. The point is this: The fans want competitive matchups. Haymon and Co. need to pull out all stops to lure a legitimate threat into the ring for Charlo in 2019 or they will have a big problem.
