There have been fans of fighting since the first 2 men couldn’t solve their disagreement with words. Soon, fighting turned from a way to win an agrument, to a past time, from a past time to a sport. And boy what a sport. With a history as deep as boxing the reason for being a fan is endless. He looks like me, his story is like mine, he waves the same flag, she has a nice ass. The reason to be a fan is as old as the sport itself.
As long as the list is, it grows every year with a new person that’s introduced to the sport for their own reason. Sometimes it’s a personal reason no one else will get. Maybe, they don’t even get it, but they will debate and turn against other fans in support for their reason.
Boxing, all fans are welcome.
Well, almost all fans. You see, in the past 10 years or so there has been a new fan base rise from the “ DKSAB” shadows. Now who started this crazy reason to back a fighter isn’t important. What’s important is that well, the reason isn’t important. In fact, this group of fans actually cares about the least important number in ALL OF BOXING. that’s right that 0 in the lose column.
Most gravitate towards a style, a countryman, a weight class that appeals to them, usually riding it out thick or thin. But the O fan base, they are the gypsies of boxing fans. They roam the boxing landscape to find a fighter with a zero and they hold on to that O until the fighter loses it, then like gypsies do, they pack up the bandwagon and find a new home.
Now while holding on to your zero is impressive, it certainly is not prestigious. You can hold on to your zero your entire career and not be in the ranks of ATGs. Doesnt guarantee a hall of fame spot. Hell, having a zero now doesn’t even guarantee you’ll be champion some day. Because boxing is a sport of Losses. It’s a sport of getting knocked down. It’s a sport of second chances, third and forth even. It’s not about who you lose to. It’s about who you win against.
Holding on to a fighters zero as the reason he is the best, is like juding a girl with her clothes on. It doesn’t really matter until you start undressing her, or their resume.
The best stories in boxing are come back stories. From Ali v Frazier to Marquez v pacquiao. The best champions are 2-3 time champions. Because losing will come, after all it only takes one punch, that one style he can’t get past.
Now it’s wilder or Joshua. It could have been Loma, but well we all know he has “salido problems” but soon wilder may legitimately have fury problems or Joshua might inncure whyte problems. It’s boxing. You never know. But one thing for certain is that loss is coming. So if youre backing a 0 youre backing a hollow number. A hole. In boxing your favorite fighter might have 7 losses, but damn it he is a hell of a fighter and an ATG.
So pick a real reason to back your guy or guys or division. Get comfortable and make yourself at home. It’s boxing and it gorgeous. But Keep backing a Fighter because he hasnt lost yet and you’ll be a nomad. A man with out a home. Always on the hunt for a number that gets mentioned second. You’ll be the real gypsy king
