"Looks Good, but Will it Work in the Ring" Padwork critical fans

Does running & sprinting look good, but do you wonder if it'll look good in the ring?

Does jumping rope look good, but do you wonder if it'll look good in the ring?

Does weight lifting look good, but do you wonder if it'll look good in the ring?

Does speed bag work look good, but do you wonder if it'll look good in the ring?

Does that tennis ball hat routine look good, but do you wonder if it'll look good in the ring?

It's okay to be ******ed sometimes, but y'all mfers who talk about that fancy, quick & too excessive for most pro boxers padwork that guys like Floyd did are acting like jealous girls with this sh^t.

The reality is a lot of boxing training isn't supposed to be an apples to apples comparison to what they'll do in the ring. And this has been a thing in boxing forever & as some of Loma's training routines are showing us will be a thing going into the future as well. Don't be hating on incredible mfers for being able to do incredible sh^t with their training tactics & workouts.

Yeah, I’ve seen lots of cats on here criticizing pros routines. I was critical of Eubank jr training every day, and I’ve seen many critical of Wilder not doing any road work (he does water stuff instead)

But at the end of the day, they’re doing something right that we aren’t doing.

I can kind of relate to this I made training videos for a high school fight back in 05 where I looked great and everyone in the school betted on me(it was in someone’s backyard). I didn’t train at all cause my nose was broken and I had busted knuckles and my opponent never had a actual am fight but he was 25 pounds bigger and 3 inches taller.

Long story short I dominated the first round but he connected one shot that busted my nose open out of no where in the second and the homeys mom who owned the house stopped the fight cause I was bleeding on her **** lol. Next day everyone said I lost at school and I ended up sparring homey in the gym in full form and whipped his ass.

Point I’m trying to make is this guy landed one shot on me and that was all anyone remembered.

I've never understood the swimming isn't as good as running guys logic. I can't swim for sh^t to be fair so I can't really gauge how tired or broken down I feel running vs swimming, but from most peoples accounts swimming is great cardio & better than running for cardio which is usually the main purpose of running.

I have heard people suggest running helps with balance, but idk if thats something most guys need THAT much improvement on anyway or aren't getting in other ways with training too.

But at the end of the day, they’re doing something right that we aren’t doing.
Yea no doubt on this. If you found something that works for you or that you feel works for you fair play to you. If it works it works.

Swimming is insane cardio. And I always think of that scene in rocky 3 where they make Rock swim and say “he’s working out muscles he doesn’t even know he had!”

Especially with someone with wilder’s build (or any HW) road work is ALOT of stress on your knees and ankles. And what goes out when you take a shot to the jaw? Lol

Lots of people dont really get what that fancy Mayweather padwork is for, unfortunately that includes a lot of the trainers using it.

I think I also remember Wlad Klitschko working on his cardiovascular form through swimming and diving a lot, there was a vid on youtube showing bits and pieces of his fitness training routine somewhere. And dude was always crazy fit.

some of that stuff is just for show and to try and done as fast as you can just to look flashy. that is counterproductive for a lot of professional boxers who rely on doing damage. this usually comes at the expense of footwork, lots of those guys moving their hands really fast on the pads are literally stationary. adrien broner looks good on pads when he's staring at the camera and you can't see his feet, no? how'd he look against marcos maidana? and how did maidana do against devon alexander, who knew how to use the ring? better or worse than he did against broner?

the reason floyd mayweather was able to do all of that stuff so fast and make it look so effortless was because he was floyd mayweather, and he was trained by two of the best trainers of the era. padwork didn't make the man. the man made the padwork. but it did disproportionately catch a lot of attention, and get mimicked disproportionately.

oldschool trainers will say that your time can be better spent in other areas. you can only train so much. so give up on some of the sillyness or the frequency of your "pad work" and work on the meaningful stuff, like sparring . it's definitely not as flashy as floyd working on mitts, and that's why you hardly saw a minute of floyd sparring on camera.

As a former (and now sometimes) amateur boxing trainer, I see things that coaches/fighters work on and I can see the value in certain exercises and drills. I also get to see what I don't feel correlates to an advantage in the ring. I always liked watching the HBO 24/7 series leading up to the big fights. Giving us insight to training camp. I would notice when fighters appeared to be over-training (Tarver when training for Hopkins), coaches doing pad work incorrectly, or just flat out WTF moments (Marquez drinking own urine) that were of no added value and likely had a negative impact on their training.

If a fighter is winning, then they can shut up their detractors if something they do is giving them either a physical or mental edge. If, they are losing, then it might be a good idea to take a second look at some of those "innovative" training methods that may be more of a hindrance.
