Vanes was a top class amateur but that's all I really know about him. I haven't caught one of his pro fights yet

      Iceman,

You think Fernando Vargas has anything left ? I know he's faded and not the same as before but what is your realistic impression of him now. Everyone says he's a shot fighter? what do you think...

      thanks bro!!!

what do you think after watching the video I provided?

This was last month, Vanes' latest fight from Las Vegas. His 9th pro fight (9-0 6KOs)

He was the undercad for Castillo vs Corrales III.

As for Vargas... I don't know, man. Its been a good while since he was at that really elite level, you know? Time flies!! His fight with Ike Quartey was more than SIX full years ago. At 154 pounds there is some top flight guys there and he could certainly be in the mix but I dont know, sometimes guys that fight with emotion like Fernando find it hard to hold on to when they are inactive over a long period of time (as he has been for the most part).

And Vanes.. he looks good, sure. I am just saying.. I know a THOUSAND guys that look awesome at certain levels... good , bad or decent you just have to wait until he steps up to fight more proven opposition before you can make a really qualified judgement.

Scully, quick question. What is the difference between how an amateur defends compared to a pro ?
I also hear commentators say, "he has an amateur style of blocking" What does that mean? Isn't blocking, blocking?

I am not really sure exactly what they mean when they say that to tell u the truth. One thing about amateurs is that all you have to do is hold your hands up in front of your face and as long as the blow hits only glove it wont be counted whereas in the pros they might give you credit for your aggression. In amateurs the ONLY thing that counts is clean blows. Period
