Thread for those who question Mike Tyson's ATG status

Notice: I'm not calling him a Hall of Famer - though he is. I'm calling out the talent of the man.

Look at the evasion work starting at 7:56. He MAKES the fight exciting. The guy was a draw, a spectacle.

His resume isn't ATG worthy so I wouldn't put up there as one of the greatest but as one of the best i.e. skill wise/head to head, Mike is a ****ing monster, he's as skilled as they come.

Mike's biggest problem isnt his skill or talent or even size.

It's his heart. Seldom do you seen him push through and overcome. When adversity hits he struggles.

Heart is what separates those who fight in the ring.

I would argue that pushing through is exactly what happened against guys like Mitch Green and Quick Tillis. Are you kidding me?

          I almost posted that!!
Was Tyson's resume weak or was he that strong of a presence during his peak run that it made the men he destroyed look inferior?

Certainly he faced a few bums. But to say that everyone he faced was a bum is just not accurate. He fought a lot of quality opponents and made them look basic in comparison.

People forget that Michael Spinks was the first light heavy to win the HW title; one of only 5 guys to ever beat Larry Holmes and the only one to beat him twice, while also taking the titles that Holmes took from Ali, 5 years prior. He had and defended the titles for FIVE YEARS before Spinks beat him back-to-back. It was unheard of and unexpected. Then you get Tyson who literally ran through the guy in the first round and chased him out of the business.

I still consider Tyson an ATG HW despite not having that big signature win over a Holyfield or Lewis. Same way I consider Holmes an ATG HW despite not having a big signature win either.

I've always thought he was an ATG.

Prime "Iron" Mike was a monster.

And he destroyed everybody in his path in the 80s.

Not debating if he was a killer or not. He 100% was. He dominated everyone during a short run in the 80s and early early 90s. Green and Tillis happened in like 86?

I'm talking about later in his career. Tyson wasnt the same man he later once he lost Cus, went to jail, got involved with Don King.

I'm judging tyson on his entire career, not just a specific time slot.

I'm a huge tyson fan. But late in his career he didnt have the love or youth for the sport. Now match a prime tyson and hes got a good chance with just about anyone.

Again. In his prime, imo hes easily an ATG. What makes him hard to compare though is when he did have the biggest fights of his career he didnt show up. Other posters have made this clear as well.

Imagine if 80s tyson was the 90s version. Easily ATG.

                    Yeah?
