Comments Thread For: Gamboa's Coach Expects Him To Be World Champion Again

Trainer Pedro Roque believes that former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (28-2, 17 KOs) can still be major force in boxing. Gamboa has won two in a row, both majority decisions, since suffering an upset TKO defeat at the hands of Robinson Castellanos in May of 2017.

Mmm. At 36 years old, I seriously doubt it - at least, it's gonna take a looooong time if his his idea of taking a tilt at the title is fighting #271 ranked LW Miguel Beltran Jr.

Perhaps his manager thought he'd got him a different Beltran?

      Gamboa is one ****** motherfuccer!
He fought 4 times last year under Golden Boy promotions, and three of the fights were on national TV.
After the last fight he asked to be released from his contract which he was and he hasn't done shet since!
Now he's about to fight on a piece of shet ppv fight that isn't gonna sell shet so IDK how he's gonna make any money for this fight...
      Talk about being ******....
Gamboa is the definition of ******!

I was a big Gamboa fan at one time, but I think he's done. He's 37 next month. And outside of that Sosa fight (which I thought he lost & lost pretty wide iirc, I definitely thought that was a decision that went to the wrong guy & wasn't THAT close) he's not beat anyone who I'd consider world class since he was 29.

I wouldn't bet any money on him winning a title again even with the sexy ROI you'd have if it did happen cuz it'll probably be some 100-1, 200-1 type odds.

But respect to him & his team. Confidence is good.

I like Gamboa, skillful guy for sure and fast. Well, was at least. Havent seen his latest fights. I didn't watch him against Sosa, I saw that he had 4,50x odds (meaning that if you put 100 for him, you would get a return of 450 if he wins), I put some money on him and won, but have read a lot afterwards that Sosa was robbed. Sucks to hear that but unfortunately its quite common in boxing.

If you like Gamboa don't watch that Sosa fight lol. I was rooting for him myself & hell I think I mighta even won a few bucks on him now that you mention those odds, but I thought he lost.

And the crazier thing was he got dropped + lost a point & still got no worse than a draw on one card.

But yea thats the thing with boxing. The New England Patriots or Green Bay Packers never really get old if you are fans of those teams, but in boxing being a fan of a boxer there is a limited time you can really be a fan of a guy.

I'd like to see Gamboa just hang them up & I hope he's looking for some other career outside the ring that he can start doing in the near future cuz you can't fight forever. And with the hardcore boxing schooling all these high level Cuban amateurs had he could be a guy who'd make a great trainer if he's got the right demeanor for that gig so maybe he can stay in the game just in another capacity.
