Wilder's Check Hooks Are As Game-Changing As His Right Hand?

In both the Ortiz and Washington fights, it was Wilder's check hooks which first stunned them both, slowed them down and then opened them up for the right hand to land. These were hooks thrown as each fighter was moving toward Wilder, and Wilder "checking" them while stepping off to the side just as each fighter had that forward momentum.

Floyd's check hook which bounced Hatton off the ring post is probably the most famous example of this punch. But Wilder himself has a high level check hook ability so could it be argued it's just as valuable as his famed right hand? It was the check hooks which ultimately brought about the beginning of the end for both Ortiz and Washington!

I thought it was a great trap he lured Ortiz into and nobody has really even noticed it.

I think his speed is his game changer. His hand speed is real, and that's what truly makes him a difficult proposition.

His left hook is not the equal of his straight right. His straight right is his best punch and the punch he is famous for. His left hook is a hard punch but no where near as hard as his straight right that leaves opponents out cold.

You can literally see his right coming from a mile away in that gif.

Fury won't be sat there stagnant like ortiz with his forearm lamely hanging in mid air clouding his own angle of seeing wilder turn left, and wind up that right.

I think wilder wins this fight... but not from something as basic and error prone as what was displayed in that gif.

he did the same in the david price fight:

but what hurt price the most was that short hook wilder threw while they where tangled up... really messed him up and wilder flatlined him after that

wilder has some real subtle solid stuff he does...but because not everyhthing he does is textbook he gets made fun of and hated on by purists

you don't do what he did to a guy like Ortiz by just getting lucky

After 40 pro fights and an olympic career I would expect Wilder to have learnt something, but Luis Ortiz hasn't actually beaten anyone of note for you to be making statements like that. Yes Wilder came through a difficult test in the ring but lets not get carried away, he was only 1 point ahead on the 3 scorecards going into that 10th round against a fighter that's at least 39 yrs old.
