    Comments Thread For: Middleweight: A Possibly Complicated Sandbox

    By Cliff Rold - Fans of divisions where depth holds the potential for plenty of both good and makeable fights might find middleweight frustrating sooner than later. The biggest news of the boxing week is the signing of Saul Alvarez to an exclusive contract with online streaming outlet DAZN. It was the sort of news that reached beyond the sports page. A reported $365 million for eleven fights moves a lot of needles and raises plenty of eyebrows...

    After cheating GGG in two fights both in Vegas, Canelo will freeze those belts cherry picking like Mayweather did.

    Derevanychenko will upset Jacobs who looks damaged from that fight with GGG and weight draining , while Andrade is very overrated, and might even lose to the bum he is fighting.

    GGG still the best middleweight without question, but American politics need a establishment fighter to market to the minority fanbase, and Canelo will always get the advantage in any decision.

      Ggg undougtedly won both those fights, its unfortuante he didnt get 1 victory in both fights. I still to this day think he lost to lara.

      I dont think that matters at this point canelo is so far ahead of everyone else that he has the potential to become great at such an early age. Its really up to us as fans being the defacto and holding him accountable for type of fights he chooses. After fielding I dont want to see him in fights like this anymore there are about 7 or 8 top fighters waiting for him and there will be more be of the same after year 2 of his contract.

      The same way we use to get upset about floyd not fighting certain top fighters we need to have that same energy with canelo.

          Canelo's tyre will be flattened very soon because we got a lot of people coming through the division. Mayweather ready to dance?

            Another possible/likely complication for the middleweight division is something that has already occurred with Saul : Canelo is incline to fight in more than one weight-class ;

            Alvarez has a schedule clash with Rocky Fielding for the 168 WBA 'Regular' title, Canelo could possibly stay there -- we already know belts dont matter to him as he is the lineal champ at middleweight, such was the case in 2016 when Alvarez vacated the WBC 160 pound title instead of immediately fighting Golovkin.

            There is also the lure of higher purses at SMW against a couple Brits, namely Callum Smith, Liam Smiths younger brother ( who Canelo defeated by KO ) that currently holds the WBA. You can see a scenario in which Canelo could be pressed by the sanctioning bodies now being unified and typically Canelo does not take orders well.

              good read

              yep, PLENTY of questions at middleweight.....

              the questions actually arose when Jacobs pushed Golovkin to the brink last year, with Saunders standing in the wings.....

              ..... but since then, Canelo arrived..... Saunders moved aside to possibly make way for Andrade..... Derevyanchenko/Jacobs will either throw Danny right back in the mix or herald the arrival of the Ukrainian..... and we still got the wildcard Charlo and the ex-kingpin Golovkin, neither of whom can be discounted

              Canelo is top of the bunch, but the questions should come thick and fast from here on

              the following matchups have already been discussed..... Saunders/Andrade should have happened, Charlo/Golovkin should as well..... both of those matchups would help with those unanswered questions

                  If Andrade and Jacobs win the belts this month, then super duper Charlo will be left dry. Unless he finds his soul and balls and joins DAZN, even if it's only for just one fight-championship fight. And even in that case, it would (probably) be for WBC belt against Canelo as mandatory. But he has to beat GGG first (eliminator). He can circumvent that by going directly against Andrade or his soul taker Jacobs, which is also DAZN and (in this case) beloved Eddie.

                    I thought from the moment it was announced that the Fielding fight was a smart long term move from Canelo - quite aside from being able to sell him as an 'x weight champion blah blah', it opens up a wide range of options at every turn. Being in the enviable position as boxing's cash cow Canelo can, in essence, pick his opponents now from pretty much anywhere between 154 and 168 (and probably fight where he wants in between if he so chooses), and being able to bounce between the divisions means he doesn't really need to trouble too much with the sanctioning bodies and is free to pick the opponents he chooses whether for legacy or money.
