  • Comments Thread For: The Worst Job in Boxing

By Thomas Gerbasi - It's the most thankless job in the hardest game. If you do it well, you do so in relative obscurity. Sure, the insiders know who you are and rely on your expertise while the diehard fans may speak your name in reverent tones, but there are no front page stories on your exploits, no high-profile speaking engagements to pad your wallet. If you don't do it well, then your name gets a little more ink and the slip you get at the end of the night might be the color pink...

The worst job in boxing is the boxer not the matchmaker.

I think Norm McDonald said it best when he said:
      "They say pimping ain't easy....but you know what else ain't easy....being a **********".
Turns out pimping is pretty easy after all.

Mikey Garcia - "Hey I got a call from the IBF, they say I need to fight again soon. Can you find me a fight?"

Matchmaker - "Spence said hes available"

        Mikey Garcia - "click"

Matchmaker - "ring ring Hey I think we got cut off"

Mike Garcia - "No we didnt"

Matchmaker - "Ok well, Lomachenko looks like he would be available in..."

        Mikey Garcia - "Click"

Matchmaker - "Ring ring, Seems the line dropped again...."

Mikey Garcia - "Who ELSE do you got?"

Matchmaker - "Well we got this guy Richard Commey"

        Mike Garcia - "Who?"

Matchmaker - "Richard Commey, it says here he is an uber driver in Ghana, Easter beat him 2 years ago"

Mike Garcia - "Ok, lets go with him. And tell the boss to tell everyone that Spence and Loma ducked me"

True that, I feel most for the professional journeymen. Not the ones that have a 50-50 win/loss record, but the ones that are more like 10-90 or worse. Paid pittence for taking a loss, knowing that if they upset the rising star the job offers will dry up. The worst part is they get paid so little the have to cling on to the bell no matter how hurt they are - a stoppage means I think 6 weeks of no work (it might even be more) and therefore no money to pay the bills.

I'd think that the worst job in boxing would be that of the sparring partner. Being a live punching bag for another man's preparation seems harder than putting crappy cards together. That, and they're even more obscure than matchmakers.

Top Rank's matchmakers seem to specialize in building up fighters by constantly putting them in squash matches.

Promoters rule boxing as Boxing has no structure or power

Greedy money grabbing promoters rule boxing as the boxing organizations are a sham with little power. Money talks and organizations wilt to the powerful promoters. Arum and Oscar rule boxing and pay off the WBA and the IBF and WBC all the time. Greed is King of the Ring

This is a business of human beings, and the underdog can bite back hard on the right night. On those nights, there’s no place for the matchmaker to hide.

“We get ourselves in embarrassing situations more than the writers do,”
I feel he's talking about Joe Smith and Jeff Horn here
