    Briggs Responds to Ibragimov!

    Briggs Responds to Ibragimov!

    June 29, 2006

NABA, USBA and WBO NABO Heavyweight Champion Shannon Briggs (47-4-1, 41 KOs) says he would like to set the record straight, in response to a widely circulated story that first appeared in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, claiming he was “knocked out…with one punch in a sparring session,” against recently vanquished Uzbekistani heavyweight Timur Ibragimov.

"I like Timur and I wish things would have gone a little better for him the other night, but the thought of him knocking me down is a joke,” states Briggs emphatically. “I haven't sparred with the kid in a year and I beat him down when I did. Panama (Lewis, Ibragimov’s trainer) was so upset with the way I was handling him that he started screaming at the kid and pulled him out of the ring. I hurt him with every punch.”

Briggs, who maintains he was never contacted by the Review-Journal regarding the veracity of Ibragimov’s assertion, says he has no hard feelings about the incident, but feels compelled to set the record straight. “I don't blame Ibragimov’s people for trying to stir up some hype around the kid but it never happened, not even close!”

Miami light heavyweight contender Danny Santiago claims he was present during the sparring session in question and says Briggs’ version is the accurate one. “I watched the sparring between Shannon and Timur a year ago. Shannon was out of shape, but he ****** Timur all over the ring. Shannon put it on him,” he asserted.

Briggs will soon have little time to deal with such talk. On July 26, he will appear in one of the headlining bouts for Cedric Kushner’s Gotham Boxing’s next show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.

And then on November 11, providing he wins in July, Briggs is scheduled to challenge IBF Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko at Madison Square Garden in New York.

We'll finally get to see what Briggs has got when and if he steps into the ring with Wlad. It's not inconceivable that Briggs can KO Wlad. Wald's chin has been suspect in the past. Briggs' record isn't all that great as far as competition fought. He got KO'd by Lewis and lost UD against McCline, and has fought some old guys like Foreman and Mercer and won. He will need to bring all he has to win that fight and so will Wlad.

First, he didn't get Ko'd by Lewis... He was taking lots of punishment and lewis was tiring out big time... the fight was stopped when Briggs went down from throwing a massive haymaker... Second he didn't beat foreman... the judges beat Foreman. Against McCline he was in HORRIBLE shape and didn't train worth ****. Today he's just a muscle machine with hand speed... I'd say he's got a big puncher's chance against wlad

I don't think we're watching the same Wlad as we watched in the past. Wlad can ****. So can Briggs. It will be a test of chins for both of them.

          End of story.
          No excuses necessary.

The last "knockdown" (which lead to the stoppage) happened due to a lack of balance.
Had Klitschko taken those shots from Lewis ....

Briggs' legs didn't appear to be completely under him though.

briggs was one punched KO'd by wilson, counted out on his back... outside of the contravesial foreman decision, briggs has never beaten a ranked fighter either...
