Comments Thread For: Bob Arum Reacts To HBO's Decision To Leave Boxing

So what are Bob Arum's thoughts on HBO's decision to no longer televise boxing after 45 years? ''I've been saying for awhile that the contribution that the premium networks, particularly HBO, made to the sport of boxing were tremendous," said Arum, the CEO of Top Rank, on Thursday morning as the news broke.

Old Bobby speaking the truth! Be graceful for HBO which gave us a lot of great fights. Instead of being network fan boys PBC on top! Yeah Boyyyyyy!

It was an amazing run. Some favorite memories were tied to HBO.

          November 20, 2017:

“Look at his lineup of fights, what is he thinking?” Arum asked ******.com. “He has (Sergey) Kovalev against a guy nobody ever heard of (Vyacheslav Shabranskyy) and he has Cotto against a guy Jessie Vargas, who isn’t the biggest puncher in the world, just knocked out (Sadam Ali).

“That’s money they can use to put on really good fights. On December 16, he has an interesting fight (Billy Joe Saunders-David Lemieux), I think that’s a good fight. No one is arguing with that. It’s almost like that was an accident. Hey, we got a good fight. Hey, we made a mistake.”

When reached for comment, HBO Sports Spokesperson Ray Stallone responded: “HBO does not deem the comments worthy of a response.”

Arum’s thinking: If you can’t make a fight that belongs on HBO, “save the mother—-ing money.”

Well, Nelson isn’t. The entire 2017 slate leaves much to be desired. There have been some great fights this year on HBO, but you had to shell out at least $60 to see them. Fights like Canelo-GGG, GGG-Daniel Jacobs, Andre Ward-Sergey Kovalev II and even the first thrilling fight between Roman Gonzalez and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.

“I just think he’s not competent,” Arum continued. “They need professional people over at HBO. It’s a great network, they have great entertainment, but they have a guy who is running their sports department who has no experience and who is an amateur.

“He’s the kind of guy who thinks he’s smarter than everybody else. Unless it’s something I’m not seeing, I cannot fathom what this guy is about. I cannot fathom what he’s up to.”

For all the **** people give the HBO team, at least they're not forcing clueless SAS on us. He is the absolute worst. Clueless. ESPN feels the need to justify his contract and we pay the price.

Respect to this new Arum who's not gloating & throwing so much shade on mfers. I think this new ESPN deal gots him feeling like he needs to act in a more professional manner or he's f#cking got terminal cancer or something cuz this isn't normal Arum type dogging people or networks type sh^t.

The good thing is that we now don‘t have to listen to Mr Important Jim Lampley anymore. What an arrogant personality.....

This **** that HBO is a not a sports network or its a story-telling network is bogus. Is NBC, CBS, or ABS only sports networks. They show all kinds of programming plus sports. And HBO not only did boxing, but they used to also show Wimbledon too. There is no reason a network cannot do both.

And as far as Bob saying HBO had a detrimental effect on boxing negative effect of driving out the other networks because premium networks could spend more money because they got monthly fees from subscribers is bull****. Top Rank loved those fees they got for his fights. Promoters are the ones that ruined boxing, because they got used to HBO giving them big money so they saw no reason to grow the sport or promote new stars because they were happy with the money HBO was giving them.

HBO kept boxing alive when boxing left the networks. Whether you liked the commentary or not the greatest fights of the past 45 years were on HBO.

I have to agree with Arum on this. That as*hole Nelson looks like a real douchebag. He alone ruined HBO boxing and he seems to think that is a good thing. There is absolutely no reason to watch HBO anymore. Who wants to pay a monthly fee to watch 7 episodes of Game of Thrones every other year.
