Vasyl Lomachenko is trained by his father. Mikey Garcia is the WBC lightweight champion. Recently, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has been kicking around the idea in the media of banning fathers from being able to train their sons in WBC sanctioned fights, which Loma vs Mikey would be. I think this is a great clue that the western boxing establishment, which Mauricio is a part of, is planning to make Mikey vs Loma next year. I think they're readying this father-ban now so they can implement it right before the Loma-Mikey fight and make it so Loma has to go into the biggest fight of his career without his lifelong trainer. Just in case a house ref and house judges aren't enough, this could really be the edge that the good guys need, not to "fix" the fight per se because that is totally wrong, but just to, you know, ensure that the right boxer wins, you know, for the sake of the sport!
It reminds me of when WADA banned meldonium, which many of the Russian athletes were using for stamina, but they didn't ban the likely higher end, harder to detect stuff that the richer nation's athletes use, like the U.S. Once that happened, I knew Kovalev-Ward was about to be made right around the corner, and it also set the table for Wilder-Povetkin to be pretend made before they canceled it at the last minute over a positive-but-not test for, you guessed it, meldonium! This could be a similar situation.
So make sure and post your comments below! Are you excited to see Mikey vs Loma next year? Can Loma win a decision or can he only win by knockout? Do you think Loma will receive the "HBO eastern european privilege" of a majority decision from the judges if he wins 10 rounds, like what happened against Gary Russell Jr, or is he going to have to win at least 11 in a fight of this magnitude for him to deserve the decision? Post your thoughts and predictions here!
