The car thing I can understand better. You need a car less & you can rent cars for much cheaper, lease cars or even uber when you need it. But you need a place to sleep for you & your family every day of the year.
It definitely can be for sure, depending on the market and location. He probably figures he's not going to stay where he's at for too long though. He'll probably move after he retires.

Apparently, him and his family live in Santa Monica, California. Not sure if that's always, or during fight camps, or what.

I'm surprised they don't own a house, but I'm curious if they'll stay in America forever afterwards, especially with their kids growing up here.

He seems like a guy not really driven by money or at least smart with it, kind of like Hagler in a way, I suppose?

That's a very good question as most fighters do seem to stay put usually after they've settled in the states. Golovkin might be an exception though. For him being similar to Hagler in terms of finances, It seems to be a staple among dominant middleweight kings . Bernard Hopkins also was pretty smart with his finances in his prime(even tho he's on Golden Boy's payroll now). Would be even crazier coincidence if Sergio Martinez also was smart with his finances(just wanting to return after having an inch to come back like many famous retired boxers do)

likely splits his time between too many places. It's not uncommon for athletes (usually ones in the big 4 due to trades and short contracts) but if G fights twice a year, that's 16-24 weeks right there that he's staying in Big Bear. I know his son is a hockey prospect, which means a lot of travel too, so his son and wife are likely traveling a lot too.
