The ref has the best view of the action and can look right into a fighters eyes to get a true feeling where the fighter is at!
Ref's were the solo judges for many years and then the ref with two judges were used for scoring for many many years.
No one has a better view than the ref!

It's part of the British Boxing Board of Control rules that a referee will score fights apart from championship fights or under special circumstances. It's nothing to do with DAZN but is instead part of the national guidelines by the regulating body for boxing in the UK. You can see the exact rules from the BBBofC here http://bbbofc.com/content/rules-boxing-0

3.5.1 A Referee shall officiate inside the boxing ring to score the Contest and act as sole arbiter of the Rules of Boxing except for British and Commonwealth Championship Contests, or other such Contest that the Stewards in their absolute discretion deem appropriate.
3.5.2 For British and Commonwealth Championship contests only, or other such Contest that the Stewards in their absolute discretion deem appropriate, three Judges will be appointed by the Board for the purpose of scoring the Contest.

In Fury's win over Pianeta the ref's sole scorecard was read out by the announcer in the style of a regular fight with 3 judges.

But I liked fights like (Fury/McDermott and Smith/Bendall) when the ref walks over to his winner and lifts his hand immediately after the last bell has rung.

There was a fight video when both guys pretty much ran over to the ref to try get him to raise their hand at the end. Can't remember who that was though.

Referees used to judge title fights back in the day.
