Comments Thread For: Golovkin vs. Canelo: 10 Questions (And Answers)

By Cliff Rold - Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez fight for a second time on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Here are some questions I have going into the fight. Alvarez has been through a lot since he fought Golovkin last September. The decision that gave him a draw was ridiculed by many of those who thought Triple-G did more...

It's underestimated how much damage GGG took in the first fight. GGG may have won the fight by rounds, but Canelo landed a lot of really hard head shots. Those shots in 9, 10, 11 have aged GGG. He's looking and sounding a lot older since that fight.

I think Canelo wins by KO unless the meat made a big difference in his performance last year. I don't think that will matter since Canelo already has a lot of the benefit of cycling in the past.

Sounding older . . . his English is as bad as ever. He looks older now because he is cutting weight. He looked the same before the first fight.

Anything can happen but Canelo KO’ing Golovkin is highly unlikely.

You know a fighter is getting washed when the English gets worse. Look at Pacman.

GGG never been down but those Canelo counters...

It'll be a good fight and I'll think we have a definitive ending--if not KO, then a clear UD for Canelo.

Really looking forward to this fight, and the undercard too. Long time since us fans had a veritable even 50/50 fight to watch.

The key for Golovkin is to pressure and impose his will from the start- in the Jacobs and Canelo fight he let both guys back into the fight by being tentative - also crucial is an effective body attack that was frustratingly missing from the first stanza.

Canelo doesn't need to change much other than to make sure he does enough to win rounds, he needs to be in better condition this time round.

It's interesting how the outcome and predictions for the fight are split down the middle. On the one side is the boxing press who mostly are tipping GGG, and the fans who are backing Canelo.

Perhaps I'm the only fan who sees it this way; however, I'll put it out there as part of the slowing down debate anyhow: GGG hasn't had any (that I know of) problem with injuries, and what I've noticed is that athletes will get injured more as they age -- injured during training and injured during competitions as well. So, maybe father time hasn't been so successful trying to sneak up on GGG. We'll see fight night, but I'm not of the mind that GGG is slowing down.

I am GGG fan (being from the same hometown on top of it)
GGG was quick on the foot only in amateurs. in Pro especially in the last years he was more of a bulldozer + his perfect ring cutting technique gives him excuse from being fast on the foot.
Hand speed was never his advantage; but accuracy, power in both hands and angles compensate for that.
So I would say those things are not influenced by age as much as foot and hand speed.

On the other hand Canelo is quicker but still rather flatfooted when its difficult situation under sheer pressure. but his hand speed and counterpunching skills allow him to survive those attacks.

Things I didn't like - both are not the best in head moves, they take so many punches in the head relying on strong chin...

                  Agree.

I thought Canelo landed the best punches of the fight. And he made GGG miss A LOT. I'm thinking if there is a KO it'll be Canelo KOing GGG as crazy as that might sound to some.

How can anyone fail to recognize the GGG camp's whinning over the drug issue for what it really is...a convenient excuse for the coming loss
