Punch Stats tell the story of the fight. They don't tell you who won the fight.

Well they do maybe ~95% of the time if you know what you are looking at/for, but you gotta be looking at the right sh^t too.

Randomly one of the most ****** things ever with punch stat numbers is they virtually never bring up rd by rd punch stats results like they will final numbers. Boxing is scored rd by rd so how do final numbers tell you anything about what the fight looked like as boxing is won & lost? The story is told rd by rd & you'll find the guy who landed more punches & power punches is the guy who'll get the judges decision faaaaaar more often then not.

But again as I see it the story of punch stats as more compelling then what success they may have with picking who the winner is going to be.
The bold is an excellent point. Punch stats would make much more sense if they were displayed round by round (which they never are). It wouldn’t be enough to change the current system, but the stats would be far more useful.

The example I’ve brought up many times now, whenever this topic comes up, is that one fighter might score heavily in a given round, while his opponent barely outscores him in another round. Both have won a round each, but one appears to have dominated on pure punch statistics. However, the way boxing works, it doesn’t matter how many punches were landed (unless it’s enough to justify a 10-8 round, for example), but rather who wins the round.

By the way, who do you think deserved to win this fight?

HBO tends to show landed punches by rd over the course of the fight, but they still overly focus on overall punch stats which is a silly thing to focus on.

But yea no one really focuses on rd by rd like they should be if they wanna actually make use of punch stats more effectively or specifically power punches which all things being equal tend to be more heavily considered by the judges.

I had it 6-5-1 Danny, but idk that I felt that either DESERVED to win so much as I thought either guy could have gotten the decision. I had about 4 rds scored as close rds which coulda gotten you either guy winning. And as scored it was super close. If 2 judges had scored 1 more rd Danny's way the fight woulda been a draw.

Although saying that I do feel like Porter's work rate won the hearts & minds of the judges cuz most of my close rds went Porter's way on the official cards & I can understand those saying they felt like Porter deserved it more.

Cool. I thought it was close, but believe Porter won. Just one more reason why I don’t put any stock into punch stats. Anyway, good fight...and good discussion.

          It was definitely close.

Well the punch stats did say Porter won to as I read them to say. The overall numbers were mad close (Porter by 12 punches landed iirc w/o glancing at the link, but as I've said overall means f#ck all), but the rd by rd was 8-4 Porter & just so happens one judge had it 8-4 & two had it 7-5.

Gotcha. I thought the punch stats favored Garcia.
