It's not a coastal thing at all. It's a "we're all broke people from the ****** thing" lol. I have Mexican, Rican, Filipino, Chinese, Samoan, etc friends that I grew up with who all use that word, and nobody cares because we all struggled together, and squabbling about words was the least of anybody's worries.
