I haven't looked into it properly but I assume from what I know that it would make the fists harder and give a more concentrated surface area when punching. It would basically translate to punches seemingly hitting harder and carrying the power in a smaller area, doing more damage. I'm still not clear how this gives an advantage. All the controversy is happening on top of the hand toward the wrist...from on inch behind the knuckle forward has to be straight gauze.
