Getting defensive tips from Derrick Gainer

Old man Gainer comes to Pensacola Boxing Academy here where I train. He was in today for the 1st time in a while and was watching me hit the heavybag. We started talkin cuz he's a big Cowboy fan and saw my Dallas tat.

He just told me to circle out when I land the hook to the body instead of jumping back like I had been doing. Also told me to not lead with a hook to the body, but to blind the guy with a jab and then go to the body to keep from getting countered as easily.

Nice dood. Supposed to be fighting a comeback fight vs some random guy Aug 12. He's gettin up there now but he was part of the elite at 126 for a while.

I remeber being in camp with RJ, Smoke etc. back in 1992 when Smoke was a young up and comer and he won his fight out in Reno... I remember in the dressing room afterwards crying and I thought to myself how much he must have wanted to win for him to be crying like that. I know him well, Smoke is real cool

Me and OldGringo like to call him the higher power.
It's got to be great for you to get tips from someone who's been there.
        Props.
What else did he teach you?

What else? Hmm...well it was pretty funny one day. I just asked him for some defensive help, and eh simply said "move your head".

            Hah.
