I used to think Lampley was the best...but now he's just a front-man for HBO selling the line which has become true of the entire HBO team sadly. I've since become more appreciative of Al Bernstein. Mauro Ranalo's voice sounds too much like an old school AM disk jockey for me to take seriously and when he says things like "the first stanza is coming to an end" I always cringe and want to turn off the sound. I've even sent an email to Showtime telling them as much.
Which commentator has the best PRESENTATION, even if they suck at everything else.

Agreed on all counts. No one does a boxing documentary better than Lampley but to hear him commentate modern fights just feels like he's selling a narrative he already scripted.I used to think Lampley was the best...but now he's just a front-man for HBO selling the line which has become true of the entire HBO team sadly. Feel the same about Bernstein. Don't always agree, but I'm gaining respect.Comment

1980s Lampley was a robot and wasn't really a boxing fan - he used to do commentating for football or baseball I think from old ABC clips before he started working for HBO.
Listen to him when Tyson was knocked down by Douglas: "And Tyson goes down...",said in the cadence of someone ordering takeout.
Post-2000 Lampley was a fan of the sport and had gained an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of the sport. His blow-by-blow coverage is stellar and can't be bested. I don't always agree with his opinions and have downright loathed him at times, but he's the voice I've become accustomed to, **** that he is.Comment

Mauro Ranallo destroys all others in the current crop. Lampley is too biased and calls the wrong hand too much.
Howard Cosell however, no peer.Comment

When i start watching boxing what really liked about highlights was the commentator style. And those first videos I watched were with Lampley in there. He has a catchy way of commentary.
I really dont pay attention to his comments of who is winning, everybody has a horse in the race so I just go by my eyesComment

I hate them all. They are just an annoying thing I have to put up with. I have boxed myself and been a huge boxing fan since I was 16 years old. I would rather watch the fight with no commentators talking at all unless something unusual has happened that needs explaining. It's not radio. I can see for myself every move and every punch the boxers throw and if the punch landed and what effect it had etc. I sure don't need or want Lampley or some other guy saying what punch landed and how hard the punch was etc.Lampley was an all sports announcer who got that job and has been doing it for a very long time. He never was a true boxing lover or boxing expert and he doesn't know boxing or boxing history very well and makes mistakes all the time. The fight might get me excited but Lampley calling it never has. If you watch fights from the old days the commentators talked very little. They mostly shut up and let you enjoy the fight in peace. Some may enjoy the constant chatter of the commentators every second of every round. I don't.Comment

Gotta be Al Bernstein innit?
Not saying he sucks at everything else, though he is hella basic when it comes to boxing tactics n stuff, he is just a really good broadcaster.Comment

Have to go with Lmapley (not even sure what the company bias is, I think its people insecure about lil boy Floy.
And, as much as I dislike Kellerman, he is well spoken and can conjure images with his words at times.
The others are pretty trash, apart from that tall black guy from our way (the UK).Comment
