This guy has to have the record in getting a title shot so quickly after losing to another fighter weeks ago.

Maybe because he took one of the best fighters out there today the distance in his first attempt at a title?

Maybe because he is young and has a large following?

Maybe because he is a young exciting fighter?

Maybe because he is a really good boxer and is a top 5 in his weight class?

I don’t know, maybe just maybe

I'd go with, it's because he gets favorable treatment as a Mexican American which translates into a following. Imo you should have to earn a title shot after losing, unless it was a controversial loss or you have an established championship resume based on previous titles held.

I think taking Gary Russell the distance earns him his title shot. He is a top fighter in his division. As such you don’t go back and fight 10 more fights before another title shot

nobody said 10 fights but 10 weeks is absurd. At least win 1 fight. And when did Gary Russell become a top 10 P4P guy? I didn't realize that going 12 with him is a great feat worthy of another title shot.

Yeah he did nothing to earn a second shot, instead had it all set up for him. WBA randomly create an interim belt, have it contested by guys outside the top 10, then once they upgrade it to a full belt GBP offer the paper champ enough to let their guy challenge for it.

They've hard to spin the article but the real narrative is that after this smoke and mirrors attempt he still screwed the whole thing up by not making weight. They will probably let him fight for the vacant title next after he wins tonight.

I don't hold it against him overall. He went for the GRJr fight and took his loss like a man. But this time around just seemed a cheap way to become a 'champ'.
