Well.. First, he's not punching it. His knuckles are not involved. It's resting against his palm. He uses a forceful lunging motion to initiate the hole, then shoves it the rest of the way through. He's also doing it in a direction where the log offers the least resistance (people have been splitting logs for centuries with basic tools in this way, though not with nails).

It's impressive that he can push a nail into wood, but let's not confuse that with punching.

That's what I was thinking. I think they slowed it down because he never changed his speed, just trying to hit a hole, and after the nail is in he just pushes it further in.
