Why not?

It is generally seen as below British Title level, so if they feel he's beyond Commonwealth title level and ready to step up, there's no point in hanging onto it.

That's B/S! There's 53 counties in the Commonwealth & just 4 in the UK, so how's the Commonwealth title lower then the British?

Because it's a title that is usually seen as a stepping stone to a British title, for British fighters. Hence why fighters generally fight for it earlier than a British title...

That's why Okolie fought for it earlier and will now fight for a Britsh title., Josh Kelly won one too recently. Cordina , Joyce etc.. all title holders now that have yet to fight for a British title. It's a stepping stone...

It's generally always been that way. It's a belt that people fight for after about 10 fights. Look back through history of British fighters like Froch and many other fighters were fighting for Commonwealth titles before the British.

It's not about the amount of countries, it's about the level of opposition and Commonwealth titles are usually contended by guys on a lower level. That's like saying the WBU or WBF belts are usually held by world class fighters because it's a worldwide belt which is nonsense. Your average EBU champ would beat the level of guys fighting for WBF belts.

Area, English & Celtic title's are stepping stones to the prestigious Lonsdale belt. I agree with you that the EBU title means more then the minor alphabet baubles, but the Commonwealth title deserves more respect. Back in the day's of the Empire it was on a level with the European title & second only to the World championship.

Nobody is saying it doesn't deserve respect, but in the modern day, it is seen as more of a stepping stone to British title level for British fighters, which is why it's contended by British fighters that have had less than 10 fights a lot of the time.

I'm not sure why, as you say, historically it was more prestigious but now it doesn't hold much weight. In the past decade, they've been held by plenty of fighters that would never even make it to British title level.

I'm not sure why it become that way. Maybe because they can sell fights easier as a British dust up for the British title, so they elevated it to a higher place than the Commonwealth title.
