Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum has made it no secret that he's no fan of the current leadership at HBO Sports, but he's more than willing to have a working relationship with Showtime and their parent company, CBS.

Earlier this year, Arum's company parted ways with HBO and signed an exclusive multi-year agreement with ESPN.

However, there are big fights to be made with fighters who may be contracted elsewhere.

For example, one of Arum's star fighters, Terence Crawford, is heading up to the welterweight division - but the bulk of the welterweight talent, and the welterweight champions, are tied to Showtime.

Arum has no problem with working out a talent trade relationship with Showtime Sports head Stephen Espinoza - an arrangement where the two sides would make talent available to each other for necessary fights.

The veteran promoters realizes that it's not realistic to believe that every significant fight involving one his boxers will end up on ESPN.

"Lets not look at promoters particularly, lets look at networks. Over at Showtime, Espinoza is a very smart guy. And his boss is a very big fight fan, a good friend of mine, Les Moonves, and Moonves will make these fights happen. They can't all be on ESPN nor can they all be on Showtime - so there is something called trade," Arum told BoxingScene.com.

    January 5, 2018:

Stephen Espinoza is intrigued by the idea of having boxers tied to Showtime getting in the ring to face fighters affiliated with ESPN through Top Rank’s partnership with that network.

Of course, such synergy will be complicated and will require compromise from both sides. But Espinoza’s willingness to at least discuss matchups fans want to see – most notably Errol Spence Jr. (Showtime) against Terence Crawford (ESPN) – should be considered an encouraging sign for boxing fans...

“At a certain level, anything’s worth a conversation, particularly if there’s a way to get big fights done or interesting fights done,” Espinoza said. “At a certain point, though, if I look at Keith Thurman or Errol Spence or Shawn Porter or Danny Garcia, for that matter, they’ve got a lot of potential fights lined up. They’ve got a lot of unfinished business without thinking about having to go over to another network to fight.

“Look, if fights present themselves that make sense, we’ll have the discussion. But not only do we have guys with full dance cards, it’s not always as simple as trading fighters. It’s not like trading baseball cards or Pokemon cards. When you’ve put a lot of time and energy and financial investment into developing a group of fighters, or a particular fighter, only to see that fighter go somewhere else for a potentially career-defining fight, it’s tough to sort of identify something that is similarly valuable in return. It’s not just, ‘Here are two similarly known boxers. Let’s trade them.’ It’s not quite as simple as it may seem. But having said all of that, there are always challenges to making deals. If there’s a fight and there’s a demand for it, then we’ll do everything we can to make it happen, as long as it’s under reasonable business conditions and we’re getting value for what we’ve put into the development of the opportunity.”

Only reason that happened was because it was a purse bid and Russell was nothing special an unproven. He was fighting nothing but TBAs at that time.

It sounds good, but talk is cheap! Arum needs to call Espinoza ASAP! Crawford deserves it!

Loma has a history of just getting fights signed and done whereas Mikey has a history of talking about them then walking from them. There's obviously a problem between TR and Mikey but the noise from Loma, Klimas and TR is that they want the fight and let's make it happen whereas Mikey it's "Oh they won't want it" and even Robert confirmed Arum called about making it and was quoted as saying the fight should be in about 4 years on PPV and no time soon.

Then it was I bet Canelo ducks GGG and fights Lemuix or Spike instead...

Its seems like Loma and GGG fans can never say good things about their favorite fighters without putting other boxers down.

I made GOOD $$$$ betting just the over on the last fight. I know when two skilled guys meet its usually going to a decision. I bet one GGG fan as low as round 7. All Canelo had to do was make it to round 8 lol.

Plungerman from this site took round 10 but NEVER paid me. FKN POS stills owes me $$$.
How much does he owe you? And if you say he owes u points ,smack your laptop over your head for even bringing it up😜

Vargas was with TR, Arum didn't make the Mathysse fight, he just took care of the tv rights. Algeri? Algeri is a lower tier fighter. And with Floyd, it took years until Floyd and Manny actually sat down alone to make the fight.

Arum has no problem letting his top fighters fight fighters from other promotions when he knows they will win. But if you look closely, all those fighters have been lower tier fighters that don't command a big purse and and allow Arum to dictate all the terms. Linares makes peanuts to fight and never sells when he headlines in the US. HBO was willing to pay more and GB wasn't allowing it to happen but Linares pretty much begged them to make the fight and get his biggest pay day f his career.

Fighters like Mikey, Spence, Garcia, Thurman and so on headline cards and have the backing from Showtime. Those fighters aren't going to let Arum dictate everything and make them fight on ESPN, especially if Showtime is willing to pay more for a fight. Arum wouldn't allow Loma or Bud to fight on Showtime even if meant they would be getting paid more money.

I’m not trying to be disrespectful to Mikey( ok maybe a bit) but someone with Loma’s Skill set what is there to be afraid of Mikey. He is not a busy fighter, doesn’t throw an array of punches, not particularly that fast , has stamina issues when the pace is pushed but has great timing and patience and good power. Frankly Loma could pot shot him all fight and Mikey wouldn’t even lay a glove on him. A non stop flying wasp buzzing around your face for 36 minutes. When was the last time Anyone slapped the s#hit out of a fly making himself a nuisance around your head. You just can’t hit it. But if you do it’s game over. Well with Mikey’s one-two he ain’t hitting nothing
let's be realistic, Mikey is by far the best opponent Loma has faced and its not even close. He's the bigger man, is sound technically and as far as his 1-2 punch, wasn't it a 2 that out Loma on his pants during his last fight? Arum would make the fight if he thought Mikey was a walk in the park but anyone with any knowledge of boxing knows that's not the case.

But then some of these posters around here need to stop pretending that he was ever going to fight Mikey next. He wasn't.
Before he got injured he definitely wanted the fight! You sound like a Loma hater. Loma is constantly stepping up weight and looking to challenge the best to be the best. Why would you doubt he wanted to fight Mikey? Mikey is not the boogieman, Loma is. Mikey is a great boxer but Loma has exceptional skills.[/QUOTE]

He supposedly wanted the Mikey fight since last year after beating Jason Sosa. Mikey told him to move up then and get acclimated to the weight when they ran into each other on the ESPN set. Loma went on to stay at the weight and bring up smaller guys to fight. Loma always said he wouldn't fight Mikey right away in his first 135 fight. Even before the injury, everyone who actually follows boxing knew he was going to fight for the WBO title next. I know both Loma and Mikey, talked to both of them, they ain't scared of each other and want to fight, but Loma is aware that its hard to make because they fight on different networks, he's said it in a few interviews.

Well he better work something out because Spence is licking his chops at the prospect of facing Mikey. It will be like Golovkin vs Brook or Canelo vs Khan all over again. I would not pay for it or for Lomachenko vs Beltran either so they better air it for free.

Loma and Arum gets fight signed with lower tier fighters that don't draw and don't require big money and allow Arum to dictate everything. The Salido rematch never happened because Salido wasn't allowing Arum to dictate terms and money. Russell fight was a purse bid. Every other fighter wasn't big, even Linares, he doesn't sell and was getting less than 500k for his fights with GB, but he pretty much begged GB to make the fight after losing on a payday with Mikey. There was no way that Linares deserved a 50/50 split to fight Mikey.

It's easy to make fights when you're the one dictating terms to lower tier fighters that aren't that big.
