Say what you will; however, fifty years ago plenty of folk refused to call Muhammad Ali by anything other than Clay (as in Cassius Clay). This despite Ali repeatedly making it clear that his name was Muhammad Ali. Some who refused to call Ali by his chosen name were just ignorant. Others were hateful. Others were sincere in believing that Ali must continue to be called Cassius Clay because: blah, blah, blah, blah (their reasoning satisfied them and theirs and that was all that was necessary). As for transgenders, I believe that they also should be called by their choice of name, and if the speaker is sharp enough to match pronoun to gender than please do so. Christine Jorgensen began her transgender surgery in late 1951, so this is nothing new or unheard of. In fact, German doctors had performed transgender surgery in the late twenty and early thirties. Given the scope of transgender surgery, I do not believe that anyone would undergo such extensive surgery unless they sincerely believed such surgery was necessary to live a full and complete life.
