  • Comments Thread For: Ryan Martin, Terry Flanagan Aim To Shake Up WBSS Tourney

American Ryan Martin and British fighter Terry Flanagan are ready for the Season II and the quest for the Muhammad Ali Trophy in the 140lb edition. "I'm very happy to compete in the World Boxing Super Series and look forward to proving myself against the other top fighters in my division," said Martin. 25-year-old Martin (25-0, 12 KOs), born and raised in Chattanooga, TN, won several National Amateur Championship before turning pro in August 2013.

The WBSS has probably been the best thing to happen to boxing since it was conceived, and I love that it’s spreading to all the different weight classes. Long may it continue.

Hooker isn’t part of the tournament? What’s the point in signing to Hearn/DAZN if he’s not going to be able to have a decent fight at his weight

Arum forcing the Saucedo WBO mandatory so he'd be stripped if he entered. Maybe Hooker-Saucedo is on DAZN, that could be a war but beyond that not sure what the plan is. With RN being less interested in boxing I guess he was one of the easiest belt holders available.

It should be Hooker entering as WBO champ and Prograis as WBC champ. But Arum pushed for one mandatory to be instant and the other to be delayed so neither belt is involved.

A frank Warren fighter entering an open tournament and his last opponent taking the WBO belt hostage. Must be opposites day.

Good luck Turbo. I think you’d have ****** that Hooker out if it weren’t for the cuts!

Thanks for the clarification. That’s annoying but I’ve seen mandatories being used as qualifiers or first round match ups. It’s a shame the same couldn’t be done this time around.

Business likely has those two flipped, tbh.

Josh Taylor vs Ryan Martin at the 13000-seat SSE Arena, and Prograis vs Flanagan at the 8500-seat Lakefront Arena (Hearn doesn't like DiBella, but he likes him better than Frank Warren) works just as well.

Rellikh-Troyonovski in Russia, and Baranchyk-Yigit at a European site west of Russia, and you've spaced out the first round pretty well.

What does Hearn have to with this? He doesn't represent any of these fighters. I would think Taylor/Flanagan would be an enormous fight up in Scotland. Regardless though, the fighters get to pick their opponents, so the promoters won't have a choice but to work together on these fights.
