Comments Thread For: Kavaliauskas-Abreu ESPN Broadcast Averaged 534,000 Viewers

Losing its main event might've cost ESPN viewers Saturday night. Nielsen Media Research ratings released Tuesday indicated that the network's two-bout boxing broadcast from Fresno, California, was watched by an average of 534,000 viewers. That's the lowest viewership for one of Top Rank's live prime-time telecasts on ESPN since an average audience of 488,000 tuned in to watch a card headlined by Jose Ramirez's unanimous-decision victory over Amir Imam in their 12-round WBC super lightweight title fight March 17 in The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

when the main event canceled this turned out to be one of the worst cards of the year. Both fights were boring

This is why they're trying to get Loma back (not buying that August 25th date). UFC is on the way in 2019. Gotta get things moving back in the right direction.

Andreev pulled out of the Beltran fight today

Edit. Just seen Pedraza is replacing him

Oh wow. I hope Loma isn't being rushed back too soon.

I understand that Top Rank is in a tough sport - ESPN didn't expect to sign up UFC for a 30 fight deal worth $1.5 billion (plus other programming). But Loma is one of the two great fighters they have. It's silly to rush him back on such short notice after going under the knife.

I assume network priorities changed once the UFC deal came in twice as large as they planned (original deal was for $750 million and 15 primetime cards).

This whole Crawford WW situation is a mess and now they're risking Loma's health because of the continually declining ratings. Things look very shaky right now.

espn wants boxing and ufc. It isn’t a competition. Someone posted an article in NSB quoting the head of Espn saying he wished he had boxing and mma every weekend

The ratings the last two weeks have been unbelievably bad. Obviously losing Ramirez hurt, but you can't be putting these showcase fights with non-household names. Top Rank has to work with Haymon to be successful. They have too many dates and not enough quality fighters.
