Beautifully written, I thoroughly enjoyed everything about it, the choice of clips, the background context but most of all the informative, evocative prose. Bravo!

Very well written and a fine breakdown of boxing's greatest single exponent. Having said that, a couple of factoids, first Liston and Williams never fought each other for the heavyweight title and second, it is hard to label a young man "racist" when his entire life he has been told he is inferior by and to the race he is supposedly "racist" towards.

Edit the liston part, thank you for pointing it out. I know Ali changed over time and please believe I know that, he still said some very inflamatory racial comments. Ali was not a racist, but the doesn't mean he was totally clear of it either.

It's fair to say he hated his opressor. It's still hate, even justified hate is no positive thing.

It is hate not racism, if someone causes you harm and you hate them as a result of this that is not racism dummy.

There is a line. Hating somebody for wronging you personally makes sense. Hating an entire group of people, the vast majority of which you have never met or interacted with is racism.

Oh I totally agree, he did make certain remarks that could be deemed inflammatory but I'm not sure they can be deemed racist in the America he grew up in, lived in, worked in and suffered him. HIm and his people.

But anyway, thats a separate discussion. As a piece on Ali/Big Cat, great stuff. I have long held Ali/Williams, Ali/Liston and Leonard/Benitez as the 3 performance pinnacles of this sport.
