For those unaware:
The smaller gloves remove much of the parrying/blocking and encourage more action and perhaps favor more offensive fighters.
The lesser number of rounds could put a premium on action, with less wasted feeling-out time available. Stink-them-up type fights would be over sooner. Longer rounds might put a premium on conditioning.
Many complain about too many weight classes in boxing. This would get rid of many of the lower weight classes, where there are only a few pounds to move up in weight, etc. This would remove some of the historically important divisions though.
Many boxing trunks are ridiculous, going up far above their belly buttons. While we're at it, require normal shorts.
all in all, I would be in favor of this switch for the above reasons - shorter fights, but with much more action
For those unaware:
- MMA gloves are 4oz gloves ... there's almost no padding except for in the knuckles (they also have open fingers although that's n/a for boxing).
- MMA bouts last three 5-minute rounds for non-championship fight, or five 5-minute rounds for championship fights.
- MMA weight classes are 135, 145, 155, 170, 185, 205, HW
- MMA trunks are just regular shorts
